PRODUCTION OF CERAMIC PRODUCTS:
PROSPECTS & IMPACT ON EXPORT EARNING OF BANGLADESH TITLE OF THE STUDY

Bangladesh is an agricultural country with some three-fifths of the population engaged in farming. Jute and tea are two important agricultural products to earn foreign exchange. For higher GDP growth, investments in industrial sector will need to be accelerated. The prevailing political and economic stability has greatly encouraged investment in the industrial sector. The trend of foreign direct investment is very encouraging. The government is committed to market economy and has been pursuing policies for supporting and encouraging investment in industrial sector and eliminating unproductive expenditures in the public sector. Among the industry, ceramic industry is promising and potential for Bangladesh. In Bangladesh there are some international standard ceramic industries; their contribution to earn foreign currency is increasing day by day. The demand of Bangladeshi ceramic product is increasing in the international market. Considering this factor we did a feasibility study on Production of Ceramic: Prospects & Impact on Export earning of Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

Ceramic industry took a formal start in this country in 1958. Now, there are about 15 ceramic industries in the country. Ceramic Industry manufactures useful and ornamental articles from clay by shaping and hardening it in high temperature. The industry is basically a development of indigenous pottery works. The ceramic industry in Bangladesh has been one of the rapidly growing sectors. In the fiscal year 2004-2005, the country 's ceramic tableware export reached US$ 28.75 million, which was 16% higher than the previous fiscal year. Export from ceramics is expected to triple by 2008. The objective of this paper is to analyze the prospect of Ceramic industry in Bangladesh and its impact on export earning of Bangladesh.

The sector now dominates the modern economy in export earnings, secondary impact and employment generated. Given the dominance of the sector in the overall modern economy of Bangladesh, this vulnerability should be a matter of some concern to the policymakers in Bangladesh. Although in gross terms the sector’s contributions to the country’s export earnings is around 74 percent, in net terms the share would be much less partially because the backward linkages in textile have been slow to develop. The dependence on a single sector, no matter how resilient or sturdy that sector is, is a matter of policy concern. We believe the policymakers in Bangladesh should work to reduce this dependence by moving quickly to develop the other export industries using the lessons learned from the success of apparel exports. Support for the apparel sector should not be reduced. In fact, another way to reduce the vulnerability is to diversify the product and the market mix. It is heartening to observe that the knit products are rapidly gaining share in overall garment exports as these products are sold in quota-free markets and reflect the strength of Bangladeshi producers in the fully competitive global apparel markets…

    "What is Motivated Reasoning, and What Are Its implication for Managing People?" Motivated reasoning is a stubborn and highly subjective means of defending ones judgment. I would say this behaviour could potentially produce both positive and negative results in managing people, depending on the situation. For instance, in the Billy Bonzai case that we’ve recently tackled, this is a perfect example of how motivated reasoning could result to both positive and negative outcome. Apparently, Billy knows how to get the amour of his supervisors leading to his supervisors to ignore the fact that his frequent absences have been significantly affecting the company’s performance in its customer service. Had the supervisors been highly objective in dealing with their subordinates, they could have been extremely disappointed with Billy’s attitude and have instantly fired him. However, people are not robots; they have emotions which affect their decisions and actions. How can they fire a charming guy such as Billy, who has made a good impression to them? They have this personal impression towards Billy as a nice and charming fellow and this is not bound to change anytime soon. Because of this conception, they tend to ignore his shortcomings. And even when it’s already very obvious, they still tend to defend their judgment and stubbornly focus on his positive attributes. And even if the other subordinates think otherwise, they couldn’t do much about it, because the boss likes Billy. Additionally, despite his lack of focus in his work, option of promoting him is even a viable option. A less emotional and more objective person might ask, how can an uncommitted employee be rewarded despite such untoward behaviour? The answer is simple, because he knows how to take advantage of his boss’ emotions, which are driving their motivated reasoning to remain fond of him.     David Shaner’s pottery work involves may ways in which he uses unique ways to fire his finished works in a kiln. In a small exhibition that he was a part of, he brought several boxes of some of his works, which were kiva forms, tea bowls, and vases. David used wood-firing for these types of works and he felt that it seemed appropriate at the time he was making them. He set them on high shelves, putting them about a foot back from the firebox, making sure that they were angled slightly to gesture subtle hues from the flame instead of them brush the work with natural ash glaze. He fired the pieces with some old slab wood from a sawmill. The wood that he used in his kiln came from a sawmill. David liked the idea of what the ash from the wood-firing did to his pieces that he’s made. One of his friends, Kurt Weiser discovered a type of clay, called Helmer and David found that it added some feldspar and that it had a body that was somewhat similar to Shigaraki clay. From finding this out, David decided to make some pieces out of Helmer clay. When he fired those pieces that were made out of Helmer, they came out to having a flashing, orange color rather than having a brownish, muddy color that came from most other wood-firing kilns. When he didn’t use a wood-firing kiln, he instead used a normal, soft brick kiln and fired some of his artworks at cone nine reduction.…
