Learning for Life
Abstract
Learning for life is a life outlook where someone decides to seek personal improvement opportunities throughout their entire lifespan. There is always some area of knowledge or technology where additional or new information can be beneficial. Through the use of distance learning, conference attendance, and traditional classroom attendance, the learner can enjoy employment benefits, more pay and even physical benefits making living easier. Becoming a life-long learner can be an experience that improves nearly every aspect of life.
Why life-long learning is important
Albert Einstein once said, “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it” (Boiselle, 2013 p 6). The working population is getting younger and the population of America is getting older. As the average age of the American population is growing, the average age of the working American is decreasing. More citizens are moving into the retired category and fewer citizens are paying into the support programs which prop up the retired community throughout their retirement years. As a result, Americans are being told that they will not be able to retire as early and that they should plan to work much longer. Some will have to consider working until age 85. Reflecting on the length of time that people are expected to work, some will be working for 40 or even 50 years (Learning for life, 2009).
Consider the changes that take place in 40 to 50 years of employment. Technological advancements, techniques of the job change and life changes in general cause a person to have to adapt and adjust to new ways of thinking on a regular basis. How can an employee keep up with the changes in order to remain a vibrant, effective employee who makes a significant contribution to the workplace so that the employer desires to continue with the

America has about five generations that function in our society today, and they are Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and the Millennial. It is interesting the way that an age gap influences the thinking of millions of people in different generations. Different times and situations require that different strategies be put in place for the following generation. Solutions that worked for one generation may be less useful for the next, so sometimes, because of the age gap, these solutions cause disagreements. These various ideologies all have one goal, and that is to be successful. We will discuss the path of the Baby Boomers and Generation X in the workplace environment.…

In 2011, 7.2 percent of workers aged 18-64 were in poverty. This ratre has not significantly changed since 2010. (US Census Bureau 2012). Of this amount, 7.2 percent of workers aged 18-64 who work and are in poverty, the “American Dream” seems to lack credibility. According to the Administration on Aging, the number of individuals sixty-five years of age reached 43.1 million in 2012 an increase of 7.6 million or 21% since 2002. This number is projected to continue to increase over the next twenty-eight years to over 60%. The population of older old adults is also increasing as the number of those eighty-five and older will grow dramatically over the next fifty years. (US Census Bureau…

Our elders can not work forever. We are the future teachers, doctors, lawyers, factory workers, truck drivers, etc. We are the manpower of the future. We are the future farmers of America. It is our duty to take over family farms and keep the crops going so that we can keep American stomachs full. Agriculture is what I consider my biggest role I can play in America’s future. We have to keep working without jobs nothing would go on. Without jobs we will have no future role to play. Not only will we not have a future but we are setting the stepping stones for future generations, so we have to think not only of ourselves but the future generations. We have clear a path so that they can keep going, when my generation is no longer here to do…

During the last couple years of their careers before retiring, people usually enjoy salaries and bonuses that are larger than at any other point in their career. As a result, money is rarely a major concern. However, many people fail to save that money. Instead, they spend it on vacations, their families and in the pursuit of living fun lives. This can lead to a rude awakening when they retire. Because they have not saved much money during their career, a lot of people discover that they do not have enough money to live comfortably during their retirement years. When they retire, they no longer earn a salary. They no longer receive bonus checks. Instead, they are forced to live off the income that can be generated by the investments they have made throughout their lives. Unfortunately, many have not invested any money that can generate this income. Other Baby Boomer issues complicate this money problem. People live longer lives today. When a Baby Boomer retires, he can expect to live many years in retirement. In the past, a 65-year old man could expect to live 10 years in retirement before passing away. The financial requirements of living comfortably for these 10 years were manageable. Today, people use a life expectancy of 90 to 95 years. That is, when a person retires at 65 years of age, he can expect to live up to 30 years in retirement. With dwindling health, rising health care…

Some of the older Americans are choosing to go back to college. Mr Hill says, “I want a job sitting down, at the computer, in the cubicle…after being out in the field for so many years, I would like a sit-down job.” Mr. Hill had decided that after working in the cold for so long, he thought that he deserved to make good money while not doing much physical labor (Sanders 24). After being a part of a great things or helping their country, some of the baby boomers believed that they deserve to live a cushy life.…

I am currently completing my third year in Therapeutic Recreation and up to this point in my life I have engaged in multiple types of learning. I have also been eager to learn new things in the context of school and also my personal life. As a child, I was learning about the world around me through experience from my parents, attending preschool and eventually elementary school. As defined previously, a lifelong learner states that an individual has the ability and motivation to continue to learn throughout their lifespan this also means adapting to change (Sim et al., 2003). At present, I am a student so I have access to past and current journals in my field. By completing a variety of assignments that include collaborative group work, written reports, online modules and hands on experience as a student I am able to continuing to educate myself as a lifelong learner. In my current situation and great access to resources I feel as though I am fostering my willingness and drive to learn. In terms of where I see myself in five years as a lifelong learner I hope to be a practicing certified therapeutic recreation specialist. By being a lifelong learner in my health profession I will begin to be able provide services that match the needs of my patients (Wilcock, Janes & Chambers, 2009). Most likely I will be working in a hospital or long term care setting meaning I will be working on an interprofessional with nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists just to name a few. Working as a team will be critical for me to remain a lifelong learner. Drawing on my colleague’s knowledge and experience will allow for me to share my knowledge and skill but also learn from their knowledge, skill and…

The economy’s long-term shift toward knowledge-based jobs and away from physical labor is a force that might be increasing the rolls of older workers. Already, older employees with higher level of education seem to be playing a major role in the trend (Peterson). The problem is that companies are going to need to hire somebody young who has the same brain of a 64-year-old but is able to perform tasks more efficiently like a 24-year-old. “Health problems and workplace pressures such as cutbacks force many workers into retirement earlier than they expect. And employers that have a choice often prefer the young, viewing older workers as costly and resistant to new technologies” (Peterson). Soon, employers will not have a choice whether they want to hire an old, sophisticated employee or a young, energetic employee. “By 2003, 82% of baby boomers were in the labor force. In the last four years, that baby boomer retirement figure has jumped from 10% to 17%, while their labor force participation rate has just hit a 36-year low in 2014” (“Baby Boomers and Retirement”). A company must conclude whether it is worth their money and time to hire a retiree. The problem is that the retiree community in this country has little savings, so they feel the pressure to continue working. Consequently, this also means a fair amount of baby boomers will need to depend on others, such as the government or family to support them once they finish…

Aging isn’t what it once was, according to an August, 2014, report in Harper’s Magazine, which covers vanishing pensions, wage stagnation, foreclosures and Americans working longer and leaning more heavily than ever before on Social Security – originally meant to supplement rather than fully fund retirement. As a result, “tribes” of aging Americans have become full-time RV nomads – dubbed ‘workkampers’ - traversing the nation for seasonal work posted on web sites like Workkamper News and Workers on Wheels. Some 7.7 million Americans aged sixty-five and older were still working in 2013, according to Harper’s stats, “up 60 percent over a decade earlier.” A recent AARP poll shows that only 17 percent of seniors aged 50 to 65 expect to avoid working in their later…
