Maths Project with cuboid volume

Respected Teachers and Friends !!!!!!!

Kerala is a state blessed with lots of rivers and lakes !!!

As you know “Dams” are constructed across the water ways to control the flow or raise the level of water. (show the dams in the models

Dams are constructed either with earth, rock or cement concrete

Now a days most of the dams are constructed using concrete which is more expensive.

Therefore the cost of construction of even a smaller size dam involves spending of crores of rupees !!!!!!

So we should try to reduce the cost of construction of dams without compromising the storage capacity , OK

Do you know what is reservoir of a dam?

Yes, it is the storage area of water in a dam site. ( show the reservoir area in the models)

Now I am asking you a question !!!!

How can you calculate the quantity of water stored in a reservoir if I am giving you the length and the breadth of reservoir and the height of water stored in the dam?

Is it like a cuboid ? ( show the cuboid picture in the chart)

Yes it is like a cuboid

So the volume of water stored is length x breadth x height

Or, we can say base area of reservoir x height of

water stored

Now I am showing you three boxes having different base areas , (smaller , medium and bigger)

Let us imagine these boxes as different reservoirs

Now I am pouring one glass of water in each of the boxes

(Pour water in each of the boxes carefully)

Can you see which one is having more height or depth of water?

Yes, the smaller box, that is with lesser base area is having more height of water

From the above what can we conclude?

Any body?

Any body?

No answer !!!!! OK , I will say

For storing the same quantity of water :

A dam with lesser reservoir area will have more height of

When the Elwha Dam was demolished it was the largest controlled sediment release in a dam removal project anywhere in the world. Because of the amount of sediment behind large dams like the Elwha, the demolition must be done gradually over time to ensure that there is not an overflow of sediment rushed down the river which could cause significant damage to the landscape and the organisms which inhabit it. At the time of the dam removal the Elwha was holding behind it 15,000,000 cubic yards of silt. Sediment buildup isn't the only thing that dams can change about the soil. Many geological occurrences have been blamed on dams.…

The finished dam contains enough concrete, 4.5 million cubic yards, to build a two-lane highway from Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida. More than 8.5 million pounds of dynamite was used to blast the foundation for the dam and 8 miles of tunnels through the canyon walls. Why did they build the Hoover Dam?The main reason for building the Hoover Dam was to supply the electrical power necessary to transport 4.4 million acre-feet—over a quarter of the Colorado River's average annual flow to California. Soon, the dam also would supply water to Las Vegas, whose revenue would be used to finance…

During the time of instability and disunity Scholars wrote about how they lived by the “Four Noble Truths” and how they accepted Buddhism even though it wasn’t talked about in the Confucian Classics. But when structure was restored Buddhism was described as a cult of barbarians and many believed it should be eradicated altogether.…

Numerous dams were built on the Colorado and its tributaries during the twentieth century. The purpose of these dams was primarily to generate electricity, control floods, provide a more steady water source for surrounding areas, and provide recreational opportunities. They also store water during wet times for use during the dry months. The basin dams are able to store more than 86 cubic meters of water. The largest of these dams, was complete in 1936 – The Hoover Dam, which is located on the boarder between Arizona and Nevada.…
