Prometheus In Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is full of lessons and peculiar stories, such as the tale of Prometheus and Io, who are traditional characters in Greek mythology that met under unfortunate circumstances. Prometheus was a Titan, and Io was one of Zeus’ lovers and a mortal. Prometheus had the unique power to morph people and create life. Prometheus did so many positive things for man, therefore he was punished by the Gods, who chained him to a rock with unbreakable chains. While he was being punished, Io appeared in the form of a cow. Originally, Io was a beautiful mortal, before being transformed into a heifer by Zeus. Zeus’ wife, Hera, “grew jealous due to Zeus’ new attraction to Io” (Hamilton, 78). To protect Io from Hera, Zeus thought the best thing to do would be to turn Io into a white cow. Hera knew better, as she sniffed out the foolery immediately. Hera took the “cow”, or Io, and put her under Argus’ watch. Argus was expected to be great at this job due to his abundance of eyes. This enabled him to watch over Io day and night.
Zeus sent the messenger god, Hermes, to distract Argus and bore him to sleep. Eventually, all of Argus’ eyes closed. When this happened, Hermes cut off his head, allowing Io to escape. Upon Io’s escape and Hera’s shocking discovery, “[Hera] sent a gadfly after Io to constantly bite and sting her for as long as she lived” (rintala-allusions.weebly.com) Because of this, Io spent her time fleeing from the pest.
