- Diversity
Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value people’s differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for all staff and students. Our society is made up of a wide range of characteristics and backgrounds. There are differences within our society such as gender, ethnic origin, culture, social and religious backgrounds and disability, age, sexuality and appearance.

This is a potential barrier as for example a little boy that comes isn’t allowed cake but his brother is, so when we have all the children and his brother eating cake and we give him a yogurt or piece of fruit he looks at you like ‘why have I got this?’. In one case we had a little girl who wasn’t allowed to take part in any Halloween events/activities due to her religion, this meant she was missing out on the fun the other children were having. Finally, another example is trips and outings, some parents do not want us to take the children off of the nursery sight, we take the children into the village once a week to go to the greengrocers and their missing out on experiences the other children have, we also go to the farm twice a year and pantomime at Christmas so children that aren’t allowed to leave the nursery aren’t experiencing what the other children are, for example they love going on the mini bus and think it’s the best bit because it’s not an everyday thing to do.
1.5 Explain how to support others to diversity, equality and inclusion.
I support this by encouraging the children to all play together and to take part in all the activities and festivals that we have. It can also be supported by having toys and equipment for other cultures. In our nursery we have a ‘We …show more content…
I do age appropriate activities with them to encourage development and sometimes change the activity to support their developmental stage. There are also special needs toys in the nursery for example balls, which have holes in them and can be squished, this is to help them learn how to catch and develops their fine motor skills. We also have lights and torches for sensory play as the light mesmerises them when they look at it and can also calm the down and we also have a mirrored bell toy which they love looking at themselves and also hearing the bells chime.
4.2 Analyse how models of disability influence own practice.
We adjust our activities based on the child’s needs & include the children in all activities and encourage them to take part alongside the abled children as well. We don’t exclude any child for any reason for example if their parent wants them to take part in forest school , they do a trial session with an extra adult to give them 1:1 and see how they go. Also at our nursery we have a ramp in the garden to give wheelchair access and the tables are able to change height if we needed them to e.g wheelchair.
