(Jwett 4). Propaganda is a way of communicating in which the promoter tries to achieve a reaction from the people to further the desired goal he or she has (Jwett 1). It strives to impact the behavior of people by influencing the opinions and attitudes, and it also makes things look positive (Neumann). Squealer represents propaganda because he is very persuasive. Also, he always seems to get away with things and he’s a good liar. Another reason is because he is a brilliant talker and when he skips from side to side by whisking his tail he can make any of the animals convinced (Orwell 36). Squealer also uses fear to get what he wants. In the novel Animal
Farm by George Orwell Squealer is shown as a symbol of propaganda. Like how I said before that squealer is very persuasive and that is used in propaganda. Squealer can “turn from black to white” (Orwell 36). This pretty much means that he can be very manipulating. One example would be when he told the animals that the pigs needed the apples and the milk for their health. He manipulated them by saying that it had been proved by science and that it was necessary for the pigs to have this because they did lots of brain work (Orwell 52).
Squealer also spreads all the lies of Napoleon. Well, like Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin is like how Joseph Stalin used propaganda to gain power. An example would be how Squealer lied that it was actually Napoleon who came up with the idea about the windmill and that it wasn’t Snowball (Orwell 71). Another example is when he says that it was actually Napoleon who was the hero at the Battle of Cowshed instead of Snowball, in this he was trying to make Napoleon look like a hero to all the animals (Orwell 90). Joseph Stalin used propaganda to make himself look like a godly figure for people to believe more in him, and this also helped in creating a worshipful image of him (Ellis 545). The way propaganda was spread was by radios, theatres, movies, schools, and it also encouraged citizens that communism was good and that capitalism was wicked (Ellis 546). An example in the book is how the pigeons spread the message about the rebellion (Orwell 54).
Lastly, Squealer uses fear to get what he wants and that is an important factor for propaganda. It is an important variable because propagandist uses fear to make people behave a certain way (Jwett 191). An example that shows this is when he tells the animals that if they don’t follow the rules Mr. Jones is going to come back (Orwell 52). He keeps reminding them that they are going to go back to their miserable lives if they don't listen to Napoleon. This is showing an effective fear because is using information that threatens the people, but also has a solution for the warning (Jwett 191). Like I said before fear is a major thing for propaganda.
Propaganda has been used throughout history as I have learned in history class. It is a popular weapon in government arsenals (Neumann). In the book Squealer symbolizes Propaganda from the Russian Revolution. The way squealer is propaganda is because he is persuasive, uses fears, and is a good liar. George Orwell did a really great job in representing Squealer as propaganda. I could really see how Squealer is propaganda and how manipulative and cunning he is.
