Lab Experiment #4
Properties of Gases
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to understand the gases; Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon Dioxide. The experiment helped me understand the properties of these gases, specifically their physical and chemical properties.
Data:
Gas | Flame Reaction | Glowing Splint | Limewater Reaction | Bromothymol Blue Reaction | Hydrogen | Loud Pop | | | | Oxygen | | Glowing Brighter | | | Hydrogen & Oxygen | Loud Pop, extinguished fire | | | | Carbon Dioxide | | Glow went out | | Water Turned Yellow | Alka Seltzer | | | Bubbling | | Breath | | | No Reaction | |
Other Observations:
1B: HCL & Zinc: When this mixture was capped with rubber stopper and a pipet filled with water, I saw gas bubbles forming slowly that displaced the water out of the pipet and forced the gas in. I then learned this gas was the Hydrogen that I was supposed to create. …show more content…
The gas bubbles occurred faster in this mixture than it did with the diluted HCL and Zinc. The Manganese produced a fast reaction.
2F: Reason to fill test tube almost to 1 cm: 1- You want to obtain as much of the gas that you are trying to create as possible, with little oxygen 2- Contact of the chemicals and gases being produced with oxygen can cause a variety of reactions. Leaving little oxygen helps eliminate that.
3G: Write a balanced equation for the reaction between O2 &
