to tobacco exceeds $13 billion. Nationally, the death toll is 480,000”,said by Patrick McGreevy in his article, Cigarette tax initiative qualifies for November ballot, setting off expensive opposition campaign by tobacco industry. Mr. McGreevy claims that tobacco is like gun loaded ready to spark, but the loaded gun is a cigarette being sparked. In other words, ready for anyone who want to be user, any age. Many deaths are caused by tobacco companies in results being the most than any other incidents.
As a result, raising the cost of tobacco products to a higher extent in California will allow those to think twice before buying.
Saving lives is the main goal for every other state. On the other hand, tobacco companies’ production is causing many deaths in the communities. If the prices are raised higher thatto the point it’s too expensive, lives will be saved from the harmful diseases tobacco products cause because buyers will not intend to buy seeing the price(SF Chronicle). As the price is raised higher, the less will be able to afford the inconvenience price. Tobacco companies have spent $170 million in California in the past decade to influence politicians and defeat tobacco taxes, while 40,00 Californians die from their products every year (David C. Isom). Tobacco companies know what their production can do to their consumers, but companies are willing to protect and fight against those who is a threat to their progress. Throughout the years, most of the deaths we have seen are caused by guns, accidents, drinking problems, or deadly diseases. But one we do not see often that causes the most death of all combine is smoking (Yeson56). On the news, the deaths we seen are usually broadcast, the same way people are always dying. On the other hand, what we do not see is why or what’s the reason. Death caused by tobacco production are never shown out to the public because of how much companies spent and …show more content…
fight.
As stated above, the price being raised will not only save people money, but many lives as well. Tobacco production has many chemicals in each cigarette that can cause many deadly diseases. Around the world, many are fighting cancer, one of the deadliest diseases that tobacco companies can cause. If Proposition 56 is pass, it will support healthcare, cancer treatment, smoking prevention, and research to find a cure to death- related diseases such as cancer. (Yeson56) Many whose oppose this proposition think it’s a way to get more money out of consumers, but honestly, the money being collect will be use to support those in need then being spent on other deadly products. For those who do not smoke, the proposition will not be affected because their prevention for smokers. As to those who do smoke, this proposition will be used to find the cure to the disease that one day hopefully the consumer will not be affected by (Yeson56). Buying the deadly product is way showing their support for Proposition 56 because they’re setting an example.
As the days are counting down, proposition 56 being fulfilled will improve healthcare for those low income families and support the research companies trying to find the cure to tobacco-causing diseases.
Many low-income families do not have a good affordable healthcare, but with the tax increase will be benefit both insurance and families. According to Ramona Giwargis, the money that Proposition will bring in for the poor and low-income families. The oppose argue that this tax will be given to those need. On the other hand, all of this is to benefit the families in need and prevent beginners to start (Ramona Giwargis). There is two wins in one try. One is that many families will be supported and two was that companies will be supported. Families who cannot support their families with Medi-Cal have better support now and coverage because of extra money collect from the Proposition 56. Another is that companies will be supported as well because the predicted estimate income from the proposition will be $1.7 billion. Some of the money will be shared with them to support the companies money-wise. “The major beneficiary would be Medi-Cal program, which would receive between $710 million and $1 billion in 2017-18, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office” (SF Chronicle). This will be a huge benefit to those who have Medi-Cal because more money will be add their insurance and being able to fill fully protected knowing that a bit more to expected than
before.
In conclusion, proposition 56 will not only save lives, prevent youth addiction, but also support low-income families and research companies. In California, one-third of our youth are addicted to tobacco production, but has been proven drop if passed. All the chemicals in tobacco and e-cigarettes can have deadly effects and surprisingly, the production causes more death any other incident. On the other hand, that can be change because the youth won’t be able to buy regularly and many will see that the pack of cigarette is not worth the extra paid. Finally, many low-income families have Medi-Cal and with proposition 56, the extra money will be used to boost their insurance. Happily, proposition 56 was passed on November 8th during the 2016 Elections and we shall see the result predict in 2017. Majority voting yes on Proposition 56 understand and see what tobacco can do the community. This is a huge important benefit for California because many youth preventions can be held and drop the rates of smoking in our state, many can feel safer and protected from the tobacco companies’ deadly productions. For the future of our youth, finding cure to deadly diseases, and helping those in need is what this Proposition will do. Those opposing the proposition thought this is another way to make more money for themselves and fulfill needs, but that actually the opposite. Thousands will be save, especially our youth and the low-income families in need. Every dollar collect starting in 2107 from Proposition 56 will be use not for any regular cause, but a deadly cause. A cause that now can be stop and put its in place for a better world, a better future for everyone affected by tobacco production.
