Would California be more progressive with the legalization of Proposition 64? The problem that society is and has been facing is all about proposition 64. People still debate whether it should be passed for good reasons but still others oppose for bad reasons. Along the way there have been some initiatives that have been proposed but didn’t go as planned. Proposition 64 has to do with legalizing recreational marijuana for use of adults 21 and older under the state law. This means that they are able to establish certain sales and cultivation taxes. Smoking would then be allowed in private homes. Although you are able to smoke and grow pot in your private home, it is still illegal to smoke weed while driving and in public places. The limit to have marijuana on a person is only up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated …show more content…
marijuana. In regards to the pot growing, you are only permitted to grow up to six plants within a private home and the place can’t be visible from a public place.
In the past years, initiatives have taken place in order to make marijuana legal in California. Even though other states followed California after they legalized medical marijuana in 1996, they still lost the initiative to legalize marijuana in 2010. Marijuana is legalized in seventeen other states. In 2000, marijuana was legalized for medical use and then for recreational use in 2012, both in Colorado and were both voted on by the voters themselves. After that, Washington State, Oregon, and Alaska soon followed and now it is legal for medical purposes in seventeen different states. Proposition 64 should be passed because it has medical and scientific benefits, it contributes tax money to the government and it reduces crimes or sentences.
Legalizing Marijuana would bring scientific and medical benefits that would surely benefit the people.
An example of this would be that marijuana is less addicting than other drugs. In the article “This is why marijuana should be legalized”, the author states that marijuana isn’t even that addicting as people might assume. The worst drug that addicts you the most is Tobacco with a 30% chance. Heroin is a 25% and Cocaine gets 20%. The lowest is marijuana at 9-10%. This shows that marijuana is not as harmful as everyone thinks. Despite what some might think about marijuana, people should be more afraid of what other drugs like Tobacco, Heroin, and Cocaine can do to you and not just worry about how bad marijuana might seem. Furthermore, IFLScience which is a website that is crazy about science and makes it fun shares information on how studies show that alcohol is the deadliest drug and marijuana is less risky. Yes people might make marijuana seem like it is the deadliest drug out there but studies show different. Marijuana is not the only drug out there, and most importantly it is not the deadliest one out
there.
Proposition 64 is not only bringing recreational marijuana but also Hemp which will bring a lot of environmental and scientific benefits. Stack briefly explains in his article “A brief history of medical marijuana” that in World War 2, the hemp was needed to plant huge crops. Planting the hemp crops greatly benefited that naval army with rope and replaced Asian hemp supplies that were in control of the Japanese. Thinking about it, it is incredible to think that a small plant could be used to make something really tight and strong like rope. You never know, hemp could have been a major factor to why the United States did so good in the war. Apart from hemp making rope, it also benefits your internal body. In the article “5 Surprising Health Benefits of Hemp”, Brandi states that hemp seeds improves major key parts of the body. It can better the body maintenance of cells, muscles, tissues, organs, mental functions and muscle control. All those benefits are thanks to the hemp seeds because they contain essential amino acids. Hemp is an important factor to help anyone out regardless if it is relevant to work ethics or just your health.
Additionally to a health standpoint and apart from the hemp plant seeds, the marijuana itself can help people with health issues. In an article written by Robin Abcarian and titled “Voters will most likely vote for marijuana this November” shares a true story about Anne Marie Schubert. She said that her mom died of breast cancer and could have used the medical marijuana to help her in her case but she didn’t for some reason. The marijuana as you can tell was a regret for her because it would have helped her but sadly she didn’t use it. Although it may be true that marijuana will negatively affect a person dealing with cancer, it is proven by scientists and doctors that in some cancer cases, marijuana does indeed help. Plus marijuana is not only helpful to cancer patients but also to other diseases like alzheimer's for example. Maybe the mother was scared or maybe she just wanted to die peacefully, but at the end it was her choice on whether to use the marijuana or not. Insomnia is however another health defect that can be improved with the help of marijuana. An article titled “This is why Marijuana should be legalized” the author expresses that marijuana indeed helps with insomnia and make it easier for the person to sleep. Marijuana usually relaxes people and makes them really tired and reports even show that patients who take cannabis experience a better sleep. This can greatly benefit people that suffer from insomnia and give them the opportunity of being able to sleep peacefully.
Making the cannabis legal will promote consumer safety to let the consumers know what they are consuming. In an article by a Drug Policy Organization, the organization briefly states that marijuana will promote consumer safety because it will let them know more about the food they are consuming. This is trying to portray that people will be better off knowing what they consume because food or medicine products will now have labels regarding marijuana. This is very beneficial because people will now know if taking the medicine will benefit them or maybe not. Aside from putting tags on medicines or foods, the Drug Policy Organization also states that testing for marijuana will soon be a requirement for legalized marijuana markets. This is very good and will promote safety for anyone that is in contact with marijuana because the tests will make the marijuana safer. Testing will let the consumer know what they are consuming because for example, edibles can contain a major doses of cannabis that can harm the consumer and who would want that to happen.
Equally important to the scientific and health benefits, legalizing marijuana would be a tremendous cause because it will boost our economy with the tax sales of marijuana as well as job openings. An example of affecting our economy in a positive way would be that lots of money will be saved and made from all the extra tax off the production and sales of marijuana. Skelton’s latest article on marijuana titled “Problems with rushing to legalize marijuana for stoner use” briefly states that there will be a 15% tax on retail sales and it possibly won’t even cover the regulating cost, plus another cultivation tax. Skelton clarifies how it will be a problem to rush the proposition because there will be a lot of new taxes that have to be paid but if you think about it, all that money is going to the government and well to the people. However, in the article “Voters will most likely vote for marijuana this November”, Abcarian argues how Colorado collecting approximately $135 million off the revenues would be nothing compared to the billions that California will make. Abcarian is expressing that Colorado has surely been getting lots of money ever since they legalized recreational marijuana but California being a much stronger and popular state due to its major cities and population size would surely make so much off the legalization in only a few years. That will be an amazing thing considering that the billions made would go directly to our government. Additionally, Skelton also expresses how California is being seen as a Gold Rush (green rush) in the marijuana industry due to all the funding that has been going on. This is a good example of how California would make lots of money because gold means money and in this case they are using the phrase “Gold Rush”.
In the same manner as making money off the sales tax, the legalization will save the government additional money by not having to arrest jail, and prosecute pot dealers/users. An article written by Mitchell states that Newsom (Lieutenant Governor of California) explains that the government can save up to $100 millions of dollars by not having to arrest and put pot dealers in jail. Similarly to what Mitchell wrote in his article, another website named Marijuana Legalization and Regulation which is controlled by a Drug Policy Alliance adds that it will save money as well because like Mitchell said, it costs to have people in jail so why waste more money on a big group of people who wouldn’t even need to be there anymore if Prop. 64 is passed. These two explanations elaborate on the idea that having people in jail for something that was once bad is a waste of time and money. Some might oppose that they are bad people for doing drug related things but if proposition 64 is passed, would you rather have those people still in jail or rather give the cell to someone that actually committed a more severe crime. Plus, some prisons are already being overcrowded so why keep wasting money on them and use the space for someone that actually deserved it.
