At the same time, not all forms of consumer finance are in the best interests of the consumer. In many parts of the world, institutions are in the business of lending money even to consumers with poor credit ratings, or who lack a reasonable ability to repay the borrowed funds.

Predatory lenders typically target minorities, poor, elderly, and less educated people. People who need immediate cash are also targeted. For example people that need to pay medical bills, need to make a home repair, or someone that needs help making a car payment. People with credit issues or people who recently lost their jobs can be targets as well. The credit issues often disqualify borrowers from conventional loans or lines of credit but yet they have substantial equity in their homes. Predatory lending can take place in many forms including payday loans, car loans, tax refund anticipation loans, or any type of consumer debt. Over the past several years, predatory lending practices were prevalent in the area of home mortgages. Since home loans are…

ayday loan stores seem to be popping up everywhere and a few people think that they are the best things ever, but in reality they are the tabloids of the credit industry, as far as reputable credit institutions are concerned. It's obvious that they are supplying a tangible need for the demands of the public, or else they wouldn't be surviving. So if that many consumers are freely choosing to deal with them, then why are payday loans bad?…

Twenty-five years ago, the banking industry successfully eliminated a critical restriction: the limit on the interest rate a lender can charge a borrower (“Do You Know What You”). These restrictions were known as usury laws. These laws were in effect for centuries prior to the 20th century (Geisst 2). Usury laws were established to protect the borrower from predatory behavior (Geisst 3). “Prior to the 20th century, charging interest on loans was considered heresy by the church. Anyone caught charging excessive interest was excommunicated and often punished” (Geisst 3). Banks fought for restrictions to be lifted arguing the usury laws were standing in the way of progress (“Do You Know What You”). Banks won the battle over consumers. The deregulation of the usury laws occurred in the early 1980’s and created a whole new invention, the unsecured credit card.…

I am not an economist. I never took a class in economics as an undergrad, nor had any interest to do so. As an undergrad I thought economics should be left to the accountants and business professionals while I focused my attention on policies and politics. When I learned I had to take a graduate level course in economic policy I was for lack of a better word intimidated. My text books all arrived on the same day and my fear mounted as the books were thick with titles suggesting the depth of the material that was as foreign to me as Mandarin…

Predatory lending has caused many conflicts in the American society. Victims who fall for predatory lending are usually low income homeowners or those having financial difficulties. Consumers do not realize that mortgage payments are impossible until 3-4 years after predatory lending. This imposes a significant role in the destruction of the American dream. Constance M. Ruzich, a teacher at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, and A. J. Grant, also a teacher at RMU, state in their essay, “Subprime mortgages are home loans made at higher rates of interest to burrowers who represent higher credit risks and have lower credit scores.” People with subprime mortgages have a difficult time paying their taxes. Predatory lending, or subprime mortgages, has significantly taken part in the downfall of the economy. Ruzich and Grant say, “Ten years ago, few Americans had heard of subprime mortgages or predatory lending, but by 2008, a survey of economists had identified the effects of the mortgage crisis as the number one threat to the U.S. economy, greater than that of terrorism or conflict in the Middle East.” This statement shows how these lendings have affected the economy at a reasonably rapid rate. The economy of the United States has crumbled at a very accelerated rate like a house on fire. It is no longer what it used to be and in only getting…

When a person goes out into the public, they commonly see things for sale, most of which they do not need. While most people have the knowledge not to buy things which they cannot afford, some people will buy it anyway using credit. While there are many forms of consumer debt, credit is the most common and expensive, as the magic of credit cards and their capabilities continue to evolve. While consumer debt has been around since before money, it has been rising exponentially among Americans due to lack of knowledge and cultural norms.…
