Many people are convinced that Guantanamo Bay should be shut down for a handful of reasons, one of them is that they're not getting treated like they should be, it is also an exorbitant amount of money that us taxpayers pay just to run and keep open, some are in their with no trail no chance to prove their innocence. The people who are locked up in here are one of the world's most dangerous people or so that’s what most of the people on the outside think. The question of shutting it down and moving the prisoners to federal prison in the U.S or just keep the prison where they are running has popped up in many people's minds.
In the other hand, there is a ton more …show more content…
of people who go against shutting it down, they say that it should be kept open because they're in there for a reason and they don’t want their lives or their family’s life to be put in danger.
In my opinion, this prison should be shut down since the majority of the inmates is wrongly accused plus more than half of them don’t get any trail. Who would like to be locked up for something they didn’t do and not be able to prove their innocence? Not you, not nobody It is said by the red cross that inmates are suffering from mental health due to want President Washington did. They would ignore them for their legal rights.(inside the wire) There was also this case where a militant had been held for 13 years without a charge, he was only a victim that was wrongly accused the was mistaken by somebody else all due to the Department of defence not being able to complete the analyses.(Pestano) I would think that the only reason that a person could be locked up is if they have full evidences to lock someone up and say they are guilty you can’t just lock someone up for having the same name as the person who actually committed the crime. Also this place has no courthouse and they're not allowed to get out of here, and clearly no one seems to care about it only 10 men out of 780 incarcerated were charged and only 2 were successfully convicted. (Sprusansky) Put yourselves in there shoes or say a family member is one of the inmates locked up. You would not like things to go that way so why should they. Yes they might have committed the crime, but what about those that didn’t. Why should they have to go through this? Everybody is a human being and they also have a family, they are not able to see due to a lot of ignorant people that judges them without knowing what the real situation is..
Another thing that is going on is that they are getting treated bad, they are getting tortured and some even get abused. One thing is not being able to go through a trial and another one is getting abused and tortured for false information. Everybody should have their little space bubble. There was a report done by the FBI released a couple of documents that indicated that at least 20 agents witnessed to aggressive mistreatment and harsh interrogation techniques of prisoners by other government agencies or outside contractors, including the chaining of detainees to the floor, hand and foot in a fetal position for about 24 hours, maybe more with no food or water, and they would also be covered in their own filth.(The Real Reason Guantánamo Should Be Closed) Am pretty sure there's better ways to get information out of people if they want it there is no reason again to be putting them through this. There was also a complaint about the female guards breaking in interrogation rooms sexualy abusing the Muslims. The detainees are trying to get integrated maybe tell them things they know nobody deserves to be sexual touched. Another time there was a time that they had a male in boat, forcing him to drink salt water from the ocean. And the time he would throw it out they would punch him and then they put an object in his mouth still forcing him to drink the salty water. (kane)
In additional this prison is too expensive to be kept open.
Instead of paying a lot of taxes for this prison they should use this money for other needs like feeding people, house they provide them with clothing the ones that actually need it or maybe conduct research on things or pay off debt. Its costs an approximately 445 million dollars just to be able to operate every year. (Guantanamo bay undermines security must be closed) but if they are moved into a federal prison in the U.S it would only cost somewhere between 265-305 million. It’s a huge difference it’s way better to move the inmates. It also cost about 3 million doller per detainee and they don’t even get treated like they should be? If you ask me it’s unfair to taxpayers. At first they couldn’t even build enough room for every prisoner fast enough. The camp had no electricity and only a little amount of water. They were forced to sleep on the floor and also clothing and food were scarce. (Gay ) That was also a huge waste of money, why couldn’t they first provide the things required then move them in one by one. If they are transferred to the a U.S prison it would only cost 78,000 per
detainee.(weaver)
Lastly they are being forced to eat. I know that most people will be like well they need to eat if not they're going to die. But they shouldn't have put tube in one of the inmate's nose, forcing him to eat it, he said he will never forget that time and the pain he felt when they would shove the food down. They say that the prisoner here gets fat real quick. Two of biggest complaints are sports injuries like a sprained ankles or toes and constipation. The prisoners here normally spend as much as twenty-three hours a day in their cells, with only an hour for exercise.(inside the wire) They are sometime even starved they go through hunger strikes. Like this man named Shalabi he began a hunger strike in 2005 with another prisoner, who both had been released, and maintained the protest longer than the other prisoner who were held at the prison. The court records show Shalabi occasionally consumed food, but also that he had dropped to as little as 101lb. His lawyer told the review board in April that prison officials had fed him with a nasogastric tube daily for nine years.(Guantánamo Prisoner on Nine-year Hunger Strike Will Be Released)
These are my reasons on why Guantanamo bay should be shut down and the prisoners be moved to a federal prison in the U.S instead of keeping it open, although there still might be people who will disagree with me. No one should be tortured or abused. They should have the rights that anyone else has like the right to a trial the right to be able to prove if they're innocent or not the right to be heard and they shouldn't also be forced to eat, shoving tubes down prisoner noes. Some of the prisoners who were not considered threatening or even here with no reason and some of them are supposed to be released, but they don’t let them go they keep them locked up some can’t even return to their homes with their family. In 2005 the feared to go home due to prosecution and also due to President Bush because he had signed a bill banning them from being able to seek relief from unlawful impersonation.(Guantánamo Prisoner on Nine-year Hunger Strike Will Be Released). Why would you want to keep them locked up if they're not supposed to again, you’re just wasting your tax dollars on them when you can do better things like build new schools, maybe pay teachers a higher amount of money so we can have more teachers in the world have smarter people.
