Pros And Cons Of Functionalism

William James founded functionalism in order to focus on how the mind allowed people to function within the real world. Functionalism showed how behavior traits which helped the survival of human and animals could be passed on to aid human and animals who came later through either heredity or just being taught. The pros of functionalism are that assessed how the mind allowed people to play, work and adapt, and it influenced the development of evolutionary psychology. Some elements of functionalism are used in modern psychology including educational psychology and industrial/organizational psychology. The cons of functionalism are it is no longer a major perspective and it is a macro level theory so it does not look at small groups or even individuals
