As they ring their bells on the streets of New York City around the holidays, the people reach into their pockets and donate, with the purest intention in their hearts to help those in need. Not understanding what they are supporting by contributing to the Salvation Army, or what some call the “Starvation Army.” When asked to describe this organization, many would use words such as selfless, caring, and devotion. Instead of words that justly depict it such as, inequality, corruption, hate, and deception. The Salvation Army is an openly firm supporter of Catholicism, demanding all members to pledge an "unquestioning obedience and sacrifice" to their church, establishing god and their member’s beliefs as a paramount part of life. Based on this faith, members have countlessly interpreted the bible in ways that are prejudice and hateful. They have openly lobbied against legalising homosexuality and same sex marriage, claiming it to be a “social disease” curable by gods love. Instead of supporting people for their differences, and embracing love and equality, qualities essential to humanitarianism, members have declared homosexuality a sin and promoted early death to those who behave in such ways. (War Cry) Despite these alarming statements, the Salvation Army’s members are still not seen as gay bashers but rather the friendly face of homophobia, creating a mentality filled with hate, and intending gays to suppress their feelings instead of embrace
