6) The speaker commits
the fallacy of appeal to force when claiming that David Cole should be appointed as the new sales manager. The speaker commits this fallacy because he does not give reasoning as to why David Cole is qualified for the position instead he says “I am confident you will find him well qualified for the job. If Cole is not appointed, it may be necessary to make severe personnel cutbacks in your department.” Basically, if Cole is not appointed as the news sales manger he will hold workers liable by threating to make sever personal cutbacks to the department. Therefore, if the speaker did not want to commit a fallacy he or she should have gave explicit reasons as to why David Cole was qualified for the job such as work experience, team management, and work ethic, instead of threating the department with cutbacks.
15) The speaker commits the fallacy of appeal to force. The speaker states that Santa Claus is real “but he doesn’t bring any presents to children who don’t believe in him. In other words, instead of giving reasons as to why Santa Claus exists, the speaker just gives a description of punishment that would happen if you don’t believe in him. For the speaker to not commit a fallacy he or she needs to give relevant evidence as to why Santa Claus exist either through story, photographic evidence or some other reason instead of threating the child by saying, “he doesn’t bring any presents to children who don’t believe in him.”
