Victims right has grown to be a controversial topic because there is conflict over its policies. One might ask why is there conflict over victims’ rights it seems that the greater good would want victims to have rights so what is the problem. The greatest difficulty with victims’ rights is one cannot define specifically what is the cause of victimization or who is or is not a victim. The six elements of U.S. political culture are individualism, private property, contracts and laws, freedom, equality, and democracy. Individualism is defined as a form of responsibility and independence; private property is a form of protection by the government, whether it be through taxes, land, or money. When looking at the issues of arrestees DNA and Harsh penalties based on the article; DNA of arrestees are greatly affected by the biases and ideology of those with such strong views. In the article “Families of Murder Victims FIght for DNA Database” the DNA was being taken from citizen who were accused of a crime but wasn’t proven guilty and if ever the citizen was not guilty their DNA would still be in a database with other citizens who did commit a crime. Because some people view things differently three issues in this article were addressed: morality, social benefits and civil liberties. Liberals may think that confiscating DNA before proven guilty and keeping it in the database would limit, define or go against their morals. For example, Mormons do not believe in giving blood, so this would be a conflict. But on the other hand, Conservatives would agree with this practice because they believe that this would create and maintain order. The next issue regarding social benefits would be that Liberals would support helping people who are in need, but Conservatives would disagree because they feel that people would be obligated to be self sufficient. The last issue would be civil liberties, the Liberals believe that is would do good to have protection but to a certain point; whereas the Conservatives favored the law and order rights more than individual rights so that the government could have power in order to provide protection.
