do a job they want to do. You can go to technical schools for many different careers. People go to get EMT training, cosmetology training, welding training, and even criminal justice training. There are so many alternative routes students can choose other than college and still be successful in life. After all, “Who makes more, a plumber or a philosophy major?”(The Case Against College) There are also many factors in deciding whether or not to go to college.
One reason people decide not to go to college is the fact that “there is a financial burden associated with college.” (The Value of a College Degree) Even if they apply for scholarships, they may not get them based on their grades and or test scores. A person with financial problems will be in debt if they go to college and they don’t have the scholarships needed to pay for the schooling. For some people, going to work right out of high school, or taking a few months of training would be the better decision based on their financial issues. “In this country two thirds of high school graduates go on to college.” (The Case Against College) The statement above shows that many students do choose to go to college, but it doesn’t show how many people drop out of college. The statistics show that “less than two thirds of Americans who study in a four year university will graduate” (College Drop Out Rates and Statistics) this comes to show you that just because students are choosing college it does not mean that it is for
everyone. Even though college is a good opportunity for some students, it can be a burden for others. Students feel pressured to go to college, and sometimes it is unnecessary pressure that causes more stress in the student’s life. So teachers show your students that there is more than just college, and let them know that you will be proud of them even if they decide not to go. Parents, instead of pushing your kids towards college, show them every opportunity that is out there. You can research technical schools, the military, or starting a business. There are so many things out there. If a student does not want to go to college they shouldn’t feel pressure by everyone they are hoping to impress. Showing them alternatives to college may just open their eyes to the bright future ahead of them.
