In the article “ Benefits of being Bilingual in the 21st Century” by Bilal Kalkan, he discusses how kids and adults can benefit from being bilingual in this society. In today’s globalized world, it is very competitive and it is always changing. Speaking another language may just give you the push you need to rise above the rest. Bilingual individuals is preferred by many companies, so that when they need to send employees abroad they can speak the native tongue of the country they are doing business with. Not only does this make it easier to conduct business it shows that, that company is progressive and they can build personal relationships that will benefit the company. Another great benefit, is that it can expose you to many different situations that will create greater tolerance and open mindedness. The person learning a new language has the opportunity to engage and be part of a new and diverse community, that will bring forth different ideas, ways of living and religions that may never have experienced before. This gives them many tools to handle a variety of people. In this society it is paramount that you have people skills so that you make long lasting connections and can be resourceful. Aside from adults having benefits, children also have an enormous amount of benefits. They are able to more easily make friends because their new language exposes them to more groups of children. They are able to create strong bonds with their friends because they are more receptive to their ways of life and culture, that monolingual children may not understand.
