Puritans were not happy during the 1630s – 1660s with the King of England because he did not change the Church of England enough for their liking. They decided to go to the New World to live by their own religious rules. Even though the Puritans came to the New World for religious freedom they wanted everyone, including the Indians to follow their religious beliefs.
When the Puritans came here. Their goal was religious freedom. Unfortunately, once they came here they decided that no one here would have religious freedom. In Document D, it stated that the Puritans had a battle with the Indians because the Indians were “blasphemous.” Puritans believed that they won because of Gods will. This is an example of the Puritans taking charge and everyone having to adhere to only one religious belief. If people did not covert, they would be killed.
Puritans liked an orderly world. In Document B, the picture shows how the Puritan town was set up. The most important building, the church, was at the town center and everything surrounded it. Everywhere you went each town was the same. To the Puritans, being orderly was part of being closer to God. Even today we still use many facets of the Puritan town setup.
To be a Puritan in the New World you had to abide by the rules. In Document C, it states that the Puritans had to make a cult to support their religion. Religion was first and foremost in everyone’s life. If you did not follow the religious rules, you were banded from the town and everyone shunned you.
Puritans loved to conform. Document C shows us that the Puritans believed that everyone should have a uniformity of religion. To get this uniformity everyone had to do the same things as their neighbors. This meant dressing the same, eating the same, following the same rules, everything they did promoted conformity.
In conclusion, the Puritans came to the New World for religious freedom. They would kill Indians
