Gender identity is the belief that one is male or female. There are many different factors that come into play with gender identity. It is not a simple process of what one looks like, but more complex. There are people born with male parts, some with female parts and even some born with both parts. For example, a hermaphrodite is a person born with ovarian and testicular tissue and an intersexual is born with either testes or ovaries but prenatal hormones produce their external genitals to be more like the opposite sex. The nature part of this equation consists of chromosomal sex that is developed at the joining of the sperm and egg with 23 chromosomes from each parent. Next, sexual organs define the child at birth whether they are born with testes or ovaries, a penis or a vagina and identity is also dependent upon hormonal factors throughout the growing stages of life. The nurture part of gender identity is the way we are raised and whom we are thought to be. For example, if we are born as an intersexual and have a penis on the outside of our bodies, but ovaries inside, we will more than likely be raised as a male, however; the internal organs may dictate how we truly feel about ourselves and we may feel more feminine. I think that the term “psychological androgyny” best describes me. It is a state characterized by possession of both stereotypical masculine traits and stereotypical feminine traits. I am a very aggressive person that goes after what I want or need and am an excellent provider for my family; these are very masculine traits. I love to wear bright, pretty clothing and have my toenails painted which make me appear to be very feminine. As discussed previously I am very emotionally driven and am a very nurturing mother to my two children which are also feminine
