William James once said that “the greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” The science of psychology has altered the way in which humans perceive themselves, accordingly, individuals can aid their mental well being through the help of a Psychiatrist. The popular perception of Psychiatry is based upon a Hollywood representation; typically portrayed as a composed individual resting in a crimson armchair flanked by volumes of books wielding a notebook containing the patient's important ramblings. However, the duty of a psychologist is like that of any other doctors; psychologists study, diagnose, and treat forms of mental illness (Certified Psychiatrist: Job Description & Requirements). Psychiatrists, moreover, aid people in reaching their full potential and achieving emotional stability. Due to the demands placed on a psychologist, a rigorous education is a requirement. Psychiatrists must portray incredible bedside manner which is similar to other types of Doctors. When I was a child, my orthodontist suggested I have surgery in my mouth to remove heavily entrenched teeth; therefore, he suggested a doctor within the same complex to perform the surgery. This doctor was jittery, prone to interrupt, and lacking confidence. Therefore, it was no surprise when my mother insisted on looking for another doctor. This second doctor was the opposite of the first; collected, confident, and capable of answering any question. Psychiatry is no different from this, these traits are important within any successful person.
