Alice's family history provides a strong argument for the impact genetics plays in her substance abuse. I was said her father abused alcohol while she was growing up. In addition Alice may have learned this way copping and could have been doing at a very early age but if so, this was not relieved in the movie (assuming base on story plot). The family is operating in a dysfunctional manner that is normal for them underscored by Michael; if I can’t fix it, then what the hell am I supposed to do? Believing that all problems are fixable and him being the man in house it’s his job to protects his family and fix his wife. Fixing is what drives this family. It shows that this family seems to like to look away and avoid conflict than deal with it head-on. Generally Michael is doing the fixing and believes that by “fixing” the problems and moving on like nothing is happening (Michael role as an enabler). For example: When Alice showed signs of being overwhelmed after being home from rehab Michael being overwhelm too he offered to fix Alice and him issues by wanting to go on vacation to Mexico. Rather than addressing the overwhelming feelings and challenges they are both facing.
Some of the feelings overwhelming this family is guilt, shame and abandonment. Alice in particular struggles with these for many years causing her hide her drinking.
