Something in the movie that really interested me was the psychological horror involved in the film. Psychological horror is when the fiction relies on mental, emotional, psychological states to frighten or disturb the crowd. During the movie I didn’t think much about it, …show more content…
but then after the discussion, I began to analyze the different types of horror that took place during it. To start off, Grace would not believe Anne when she said she was seeing ghosts. She just thought she was seeing things and made her read the bible. Even though in most cases you wouldn’t expect to see that, in horror movies, the bible is usually a somewhat normal aspect. Another thing that is strange between the mother and the two children is that she will not let them be around sunlight. Throughout the whole film, Grace was always making sure the blinds were shut in order for them to walk through any place that had doors or any sort of windows. They could not be around any type of sunlight whatsoever. Something I learned in Psychology is Munchausen Disorder where someone is determined that one of them have a mental disorder, when they usually do not. Psychology plays a role to this movie because the mother acts a lot like that disease I learned about, because the kids in this movie don’t actually have a disease where they can’t be around sunlight, they are just dead.
Another aspect of horror during this film is the fog and the lights for most of the movie. When the father came back from the war, there was fog. Some might agree that the father came back from the war to say goodbye to his family for the last time, but it was not 100% clear to why exactly but it was an important role. The servants also had to do with the fog. There were three dead servants at the ‘haunted’ house. The three servants were seen as “trapped” in the house and couldn’t leave because of the fog. In my opinion, without the fog it wouldn’t be as scary. I think the fog sets the mood in a scarier direction.
As you can see, there are many different horror aspects in the movie The Others. The movie was dramatic from the start. When the mom wakes up screaming in the beginning, that automatically sets the mood for the movie. Grace, the mother was on edge the whole movie and was never okay. The fog also adds to the dramatic aspect of the film in many ways.
In the movie The Others, there are many things that made me think more in depth about the aspect of horror and gothic.
The film starts off with the mother, Grace, screaming when she woke up. Many things went through my head when that happened. As I thought about it more and more after the movie, I began to think that Grace woke up after killing herself and her 2 children. After she woke up, they began to tell the story of how they got to the end, where they are all dead.
