Jonathan Kozol, in his essay Still Separate, Still Unequal, is proposing that many Americans that live far from major cities are under the impression that racial isolation in urban public schools has steadily diminished in more recent years. For The Shame of the Nation, Kozol constructed 5 years worth of preliminary research upon writing his book. He visited 60 schools in 30 different districts, and 11 various states. What he found proves to be disappointing. Schools today are in worse conditions than they were in the desegregation era. In his book, “The Shame of the Nation”, Jonathan Kozol outlines core inequalities in the American educational system. According to Kozol although great steps were made in the 1960s and 1970s to integrate schools, by the end of the 1980s schools had begun to re-segregate. In inner cities such as Chicago, eighty-seven percent of children enrolled in public schools were either black or Hispanic, and only ten percent were white (page#). I agree with both of the authors that there is a problem in the United Sates education system when it comes to race and segregation but I do not think that the issue is as wide spread as the authors make it out to be but in other areas the situation is only getting worse and this lack of diversity in schools can only lead to further problems with race relations. In comparing the essay Still Separate, still unequal: American’s Educational Apartheid by Johnathan Kozol and the essay Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Beverly Tatum you see that both essays have many similarities and differences in the points that they are trying to convey as well as the conclusions that each of the essays come to. Each essay presents different problems in the education system in the United States with racial equity, such as the point being raised by Kozol that many schools in major cities across the country are all but segregated; but they also show that there is some potential in fixing the education system.…
Since the founding of the public school system, students of higher SES with more engaged parents have done better and gone on to greater success after school. Furthermore, certain individuals are just born with higher IQ rates, often giving them an edge in the academic environment. Conservative arguments against low SES, funding, and race are irrelevant to the educational argument as they simply refuse to acknowledge them as key variables in education. Ultimately, inequality in education will only be solved when commonsense reforms are made. Increased funding for struggling schools and a workforce that can better relate to students of various SES will lead to an improved perception of the U.S.’ Education System for those in poverty who generally feel irrelevant in it. Schools have an increasingly critical role in socializing our youth and school segregation hurts minorities in multiple ways. In predominately black, high poverty schools, students are not given the resources they need to succeed. This causes them to internalize the idea that society already fuels that they are just another person destined to fall into the cycle of poverty, lack of education, and incarceration – another poor person of color in the system. Throughout the United States, there are many regular disparities among our education system. First, there is an alarming disparity in education especially in the United States.
