They do this 3 times in a row. The water is said to be "blessed", so dipping into it is supposed to clean you of the bad things so as to bring good luck or at least help ward off evil throughout the year.

    Of course with Juan Ponce de Leon being the governor and European “founder” of Puerto Rico, he believed that colonies should be self-governed within the colony. But, while he does believe that new lands should be self governed by who ever discovered the land first, what sets him apart is his ideas that all benefits of the colony should be given back to the “mother country” (In his case, Spain). What this idea means is that all wealth that is obtained from the new land must be given back to the mother country. The “wealth” from the new countries includes slaves, trade routes, and of course gold. Also, Ponce de Leon believes the colony is not fully owned by the governor, but is a part of is and owned by the mother country and the mother country makes the ultimate decisions about the colony.     According to history.com, Puerto Rico was known as San Juan Bautista back then. Juan Ponce De León was given permission from Spain to explore the island of San Juan Bautista in 1508 to 1509. Juan Ponce De León might of explored the island before, its not known yet. Juan Ponce De León was named governor of Puerto Rico.     This is also a big celebration where they will show respect to their deceased love ones. One of the things that is done is making of huge kites. These kites are made from rice paper and bamboo and can be up to 20 meters in diameter. This is the way they communicate with their loved ones. After flying them the people will burn them, because this allows the spirits of their loved ones to return from the earth. The people will decorate the graves with colorful lots of colorful flowers and they will actually celebrate in the graveyard where they can pray and show respect to their loved ones.
