This painting is called Pullman created by Hung Liu. It was created in 2004 and is an oil on canvas painting that is 66x132 inches. This painting is located in the Hunter Art Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Pullman is made up of mostly neutral colors. There are various repeating shapes, Circles and rectangles, in the background all of which look either red or

orange. The colors fading off of the two men in the foreground drips leading from their bodies down to the bottom of the canvas. Another interesting thing about this painting is there is a bottle in-between the two men and the left side of the canvas. The two men are the most detailed parts of the whole painting. The figures look as if they are in poverty, because they are wearing rags for clothes and neither are wearing shoes. The

One type of line that is most obvious are the slow action diagonal lines that run from the left side of the portrait to the shoulders of the two figures standing in the center. There are also a numerous amounts of soft straight lines that run down the painting to give it the appearance of melting, this is used to draw your eyes down to the bottom of the painting. In this work of art the artist uses several different types of implied depth to indicate shape. although it is not clearly seen in this picture the artist uses diminishing size and overlap. the figures overlap the beach that is in the background also the figures overlap. also, diminishing size is also seen because the man in

The art piece is representational, the lines are sharp and there are various and different shapes. The texture is smooth and there has been more than one colour that has been used in the painting. The tone shows that the sun is on him even though there is no sun shown in the portrait. Space and depth has been used as you can tell the objects are further away and the ones that are closer up and in detail.…

Wiley’s piece communicates stability with straight horizontal and vertical lines. For example, in the young African-American man his broad shoulders, attire and unfamiliar posture challenges the viewers. Overall, it communicates a sense of power and authority. Wiley also challenges the traditional law of space. The space is shallow. The overlapping of flowers on the male figure stands out with a light blue background. It gives the male figure an illusion of height and width. Wiley shows ranges of blue tones in his jeans and brown tones in his skin. The painting has both primary and secondary colors; such as, the yellow and orange in his shirt and the red hat he’s holding in his left hand. Also, in the background he uses yellows, blues, greens and reds in the flowers. His painting has many highlights; for example, the highlights in the male figures right hand and arm, chin and neck, right pants leg, the hat and the top of his shoes. In addition, there are also many cast shadows; such as, in the males figures left pants leg, top of the hat, inside his right arm and the whole right side of his face. Wiley manipulates the paint to create visual texture of baggy, more ridged and tapered look in male figures pants. The floral motif exemplifies a feeling of movement all over and a natural pattern that are not exactly alike. When you look at this painting,…

The whole painting may evoke a gloomy and depressing mood in the viewer because the men appear to be struggling. The red cloth seems to symbolize bloodshed because of the seemingly violent scene that is taking place in the rest of the painting. The dominant figure on the right appears to be fighting for his life because of the way he is clenching his teeth. He could be extending his arm to reach for help from someone not included in the painting. The knife in the crouched man’s hand symbolizes war, and his loose grip on the knife may represent his defeat. The smoke that appears…

Line is used by creating sharp lines to divide colors in this painting. There is also sharp, bold lines to show the exaggeration and a shadow of creating the 3D effect. There are also lines that have a vantage point to show the 3D effect as well. In the background of the painting it shows the buildings are in the distance and multiple figures are up front posing by doing an action. Shape is shown in this painting as well.…

The use of geometric form is widely used in this painting. The countertop at the bottom left runs at an angle from the bottom to off the composition to the left in a very straight line. The floorboards, in which are at an opposite angle to the countertop, run through the composition in straight lines. Other geometric forms include the support beams that run up vertically to the ceiling. These geometric forms contrast with the organic and elongated forms in the rest of the painting.…

The painting itself is rather angular and has many of its shapes being just straight lines filled with simple colors. There are no elaborate brush strokes, no real signs of any shading or chiaroscuro, everything is a solid color. However upon looking closer, the amount of time taken to paint this piece can be clearly seen. Each object is careful filled with its chosen color and…

Points, lines, and shapes help create oil paintings. There are symmetrical forms of the barmaid depicting visual weights and counterweights in the piece, A Bar at the Folies Bergere, by Eduaor Manet. The shapes in this piece are geometric by the reflection of the mirror and also soft edged by the crowd in the background in the mirror almost faded out. The overall balance is destabilized. The masses in this painting are mostly focused on the bar tender then geometrically have the crowd smaller and faded away in the mirror depiction. The textures of this image are implied because there are x-ray photographs that reveal that Manet twice shifted the barmaid’s reflection further right. The color scheme is broken down with light and dark colors making it appear naturalistic. The space is created in two dimensional work with the barmaid’s image reflecting off of the mirror with the crowd portrayed in the background…

The work has a grid that spans across the canvas and appears sporadically throughout the painting. Pousette – Dart breaks away from the cubist structure to include diamonds, circles, ovals, arcs, teardrops and crosses. Occasionally, you can almost make out an object, potentially a bird in the lower left or a flower in the lower right. The grid and shapes are very apparent and clearly outlined, however, the image as a whole seems to shift in and out of focus possibly because Pousette-Dart wanted a piece of art that was “mysterious and transcending, yet solid and real.”…

They are not just simple lines, but rather a mixture of lines that flow with and against one another. From these mixtures of lines, he creates shapes both real and abstract, but mostly abstract. The real shapes that are shown within the painting are the letters he uses. The rest of the painting is mostly abstract with shapes having no real definition of an object that can be seen in real life. With the use of real and abstract shapes,…

In Book Two, Alberti identifies the three parts of the painting as circumscription, composition and reflection of lights. The first part, circumscription, is described as “the edge with a line (60)” or a thin line called an outline or border that surrounds the painting. The second part of the painting involves composition or when many services viewed as fitting together (60).” He states it is where a grid is drawn and the artist sits on one side and can peer through the grid and create an image. Composition gives the artwork emotions and movement 65), which included seven…

Before I walked up close to it, from a distance I thought the shapes were either colorful seaweed or moving seahorses. I was confused on what the artist was trying to portray with their work of art. When I got closer my thoughts changed. My thoughts slowly became more positive, and it started to come to life. The painting looked mysterious, it felt like there was a lot of meaning behind it. It looked overpowering, and strange. The more I thought about that I realized that this painting was unique. While looking at the painting I feel like the colors signify an emotion.…

    What Art Means to Me

The first piece of art that I would like to explain is a piece of art from William Kentridge: Stereoscope 1998–99. This piece of art was very different for me. It reminds me of something you would see in a scary movie. The image was charcoal and pastel but with a rich color that brings out a great feature. The undertones or comedic bits of self deprecation that rendered the message that he was trying to convey. The string attached to the gentlemen’s neck giving us the illusion of the man being hung stood out as well. But, what stood out the most were the lines. The outline of the space of the man that was hanging was created in depth. It clearly wanted us to see the sketches of this man clothing and where the water begin to pour out through the arming area. There were several contour lines that we can see as well. The most powerful line that we can see in this image is the implied lines, which are the direction the figures in a given composition are looking. When we look at the top of his suite jacket the lines allows us to follow all the way down to the streaming waters. Overall this image was very detailed in color and structure.…

The artists painted his ornamental characters in two dimensions and avoid any effects of depth to enhance the significance of each character and it’s canvas. The two lovers are shown completely absorbed in one another surrounded by aura of gold that look like halo is surrounding them. Taschen mentioned in his book “Entirely in line with Art Nouveau Philosophy, the lovers are shown as universal, cosmogonal and in tune with nature and expressing a single complete experience” about the two characters in the picture. The lovers symbolized as a union due to ornamental symbolism in the lovers garment. The man in the picture is painted in geometric form with black and white rectangular areas of black in his garment, however the woman is painted more in soft features of colorful, flowery, curved elements. The painting can be interpreted as a space on which a wide variety of different notions can be projected, a…
