Prince plays the gospel preacher for the first 40 seconds, telling us to start enjoying and forget about the afterworld. The track unfolds, and he seizes the moment, fitting fuzzy, hard rock guitar with funky synths, urging the audience to “look for the purple banana.” (Carcieri 85). He finishes the song by ripping one holy of a guitar solo after climbing back to the stage. “When Doves Cry” is funky and base-less at the same time. It sums up the angst at heart of the movie of Purple Rain. The lyrics are perfectly reflected by the anxiety and sadness in the central synth riff. It centers a man who has lost his parents and is very

    N. Scott Momaday, in the memoir “The Way to Rainy Mountain”, traced the ancestral roots of his tribe back to the start of the Kiowa tribe. Momaday had always known about his ancestry but the death of his grandmother, Aho, prompted him to seek an in-depth personal exploration of his family history and background. Therefore, Momaday went back to his grandmother's residence and he observed that the spirit of the Kiowa tribe was faint but still very stirring. When he travelled to Aho’s house after her death, he’s looking to build a connection with his ancestors. Momaday felt that he could learn a lot of things and gain some insight from his visit to the motherland. From this article, it is evident that the Kiowa people were very spiritual and had an unbending love for nature because they strived to preserve the environment and performed spiritual dances and rituals in veneration to the sun. This memoir is an embodiment of the Kiowa culture, and N. Scott Momaday gives the reader a succession of oral narratives from the Kiowa community.…

    A Steady Rain

It’s your typical cop movie, findable on the local channels. Two police officers claim to use their power for the good of the people, but find out how much easier it is to take matters into their own hands. Although we all can get this on our television for free, director Tazewell Thompson takes Keith Huff’s “A Steady Rain” and turns it into something worth paying for, or did he? The set is completely simple; as a matter of fact I must say it is very uncreative. There are two seats in the front and several are lined up in the back making two single rows. In the far back and sides of the stage, there are blinds with cracks in it as if people have been peeping through them. No art work, not even a coffee table, just chairs and blinds surrounded the stage. It took a while but it hit me, it is an interrogation room. Now, the only thing I predict coming is be a waste of hard earn money and angry people in the audience asking for a refund. But when the two actors came out and started to talk to the audience as if we were a part of the act, it startled me and caught my attention. I’m really in for the night of my life and if you were in my shoes, you’ll be to. This is definitely not your typical play; loyalty, friendship, and lives are at stake. Huff wants us to understand that it does not matter how long or how close you are with someone because in a split second they can betray you.…

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-air. These are the opening lines to the intro song of the television comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, that me and every 90’s kids with a TV has had memorized since the day we first heard it. Even as you read that first sentence, you can’t help but to rap the words, and hum the tune as you envision a young Will Smith spinning on his royal chair with the graffiti background. The effect of the lyrics and the music video to this intro song goes way beyond pure entertainment value. The music video and lyrics spread happiness, smiles, and even helped to usher in a new generation of kids with the carefree fresh prince mindset.…

School Daze is a film that was directed, produced, written, and starred in by the legendary filmmaker Spike Lee. Spike Lee was once again trying to make America conscience and aware of racial issues, but this time it was focused on internalized racism at historical black colleges and universities (HBCU). Lee explored an issue that is still prominent in today's society, light-skinned versus dark-skinned African Americans, good hair versus bad hair, and the Greeks versus the Afro-centric students. School Daze is a very enlightening film, but it took a lot of different elements to complete a film of this magnitude to make others aware of this racial issue.…
