Purpose Of College Education

People disagree about the value of college in today's modern society, but it is my opinion that the primary mission of colleges and universities, above all secondary function, is to prepare the students who pass through its system to take their place in the workforce. College prepares students to become well-rounded individuals who are exposed to many different modalities of thought, such as science, or humanities, or arts. As a byproduct, these same students are prepared to join the workforce after their education is complete. The primary purpose of education is to prepare someone to live in the world at large, and as the final step in education, it is especially important that college education perform this task. The only way to survive in
the world is to contribute to it in some manner, which for most equates to being part of the workforce. Bearing this in mind, it is a natural extension of being education that the higher education of colleges and universities should devote themselves to preparing students for the workforce.
