God wanted Africans to be slaves. “To make free those whom God has doomed to be slaves…” According to McDuffie’s argument, God created Africans to be nothing but slaves and the only way African Americans could get out of that was if they changed the color of their skin. Different owners or masters treat their slaves differently especially if their good slaves. For example, if a slave picks a lot of cotton, then that would double the amount that they are worth. The wife’s of the owners were the most lenient human beings. Although, sometimes they get jealous of slaves that their husband like the most. …show more content…
The second purpose of slavery was because of skin color.
“It is marked on the face, stamped on the skin, and shown by the inferiority of this race”. The slaves had got beaten so bad, close to death that it left marks on them from being whipped. Just from being “African American”, the “whites” think they were considered slaves. Sometimes, the slaves were given new names every time they were sold, whether they agreed to it or not. And, if they made too much noise or made conversation, they could end up losing their life.
The third purpose of slavery was free labor. Working on a big plantation like they did, having slaves to work for them was much cheaper. Slaves would be outside all day until night time. Slaves brought in the crops and were servants in the house. Slaves didn’t get beat as bad though, because the better the slaves did, the more they were worth. Their owners feel as if they’re dominant since they have a lot of power over the slaves. The owners break the slaves down so they wouldn’t dare disrespect their
owners.
Finally, slaves felt useless. They were separated from their families so they felt as if they didn’t have much to live for. “Two of the wretches were drowned, but they got the other, and afterwards whipped him unmercifully for preferring death to slavery.” The slaves were ready to go ahead and die instead of being tortured as in being raped, abused and being sold around to different owners. They didn’t want or ask for that miserable life. Also, they had the worst living conditions. It could be about 50 slaves sleeping in one hot room and they had to wake up early in the morning.
Therefore, the purpose of slavery in the United States was because God wanted them to be slaves, their skin color, and free labor and because some Africans felt useless. Belonging to another human brings pain and frustration to the slaves. Slavery changes a person’s whole life around.
