Marion Jones had won 3 gold and 2 bronze medals at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Life was good until federal investigators approached Jones in 2007 as to whether she knew Victor Conte (a known distributor of PEDs to professional athletes). She denied the allegations and said she “didn’t know nuthin”. But that didn’t last long, soon she was forced to admit she had been using steroids for a long time, which disqualified and stripped her and her teammates from those gold medal victories.
Athletes that choose to use PEDs are in danger of being in serious trouble if caught. Privileges and awards that were given to them before could easily be deprived of them. It is not worth the risks being taken to consume harmful drugs.
Loosing privileges and awards are not the only risks taken while consuming PEDs. Health risks are attached to the drug just as much. PEDs cause more serious damage to your body than good. Risks include liver damage, tumors, increased aggressiveness, high blood pressure, heart and circulatory problems, severe acne and more.
Lyle Alzado played defensive end in the NFL for 3 terms, culminating in a championship with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1984. He was one of the 1st pro athletes to admit using steroids. Alzado died at the age of 43 from a brain tumor that he was convinced stemmed from his steroid use.
Not only do these steroids and PEDs damage your body, they can result in death.
While some would argue that athletes would benefit from taking steroids and will enhance their performance, taking these PEDs is unfair to those athletes who do not use them. Those who use PEDs to influence their ability are not showing their true talent and gives them advantages above those who don’t take any form of steroids or PEDs.
