October 3, 2013 The Pursuit Of Holiness: By Jerry Bridges Holiness is very important to pursue as a follower of Jesus Christ. After reading the book by Jerry Bridges; "The Pursuit Of Holiness", I was able to connect my own understanding of being holy, with the idea that the author has about holiness, and compare it all with what the scripture says about pursuing a holy life. There are many great main ideas and lessons that Jerry writes about, and his book has allowed me to grow spiritually in new ways that I have never been introduced to. Bridges opens his book with a personal experience that initially got him thinking about being holy. He talks about three main problems that get in the way of us christians experiencing holiness in our relationship with God. The first problem that he addresses is that "our attitude toward sin is more self centered than God-centered". (page 16) His thoughts on this are that we focus more on our own victory in the sin, rather than the victory that God has in our sin. This idea completely opened my eyes, because I have never thought about this. In struggling and battling in my sin, I had the heart in it where I was concerned about my own victory rather than God having victory in the sin. This is so important when seeking to live out a holy life when dealing with sin. "All sin is against God..." claims Jerry on page 4. "Our second problem is that we have misunderstood living by faith to mean that no effort at holiness is required on our part." (page 17) He quotes the verse from Galations chapter two that talkes about living in our earthly flesh, and relying on faith alone. He goes into detail, explaining that this doesnt mean that God only calls us to have faith, but to also live this out in our actions. I always sort of had this concept in my head, but I never thought of applying this in my
