MAT 221: Introduction to Algebra Pythagorean Quadratic

The Pythagorean Theorem was termed after Pythagoras, who was a well-known Greek philosopher and mathematician, and the Pythagorean Theorem is one of the first theorems identified in ancient civilizations. “The Pythagorean theorem says that in any right triangle the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse” (Dugopolski, 2012, p. 366 para. 8). For this reason, many builders from various times throughout history have used this theorem to assure that their foundations were laid out with right angles. In this assignment, we will use the example of locating a treasure using two different treasure maps as the two points needed to determine how many paces it will take to find the exact location to start digging for treasure.
For this assignment, we are given instructions to solve problem number 98 from page 371 in Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, which states that Ahmed’s treasure map specifies that the treasure can be found 2x +6 steps from Castle Rock and Vanessa’s half indicates to walk x steps heading north, then 2x + 4 steps toward the east (Dugopolski, 2012). We need use the Pythagorean Theorem to figure out what variable x would be if they were to work together and combine their information. The Pythagorean Theorem indicates that a right triangle has legs with the length of a and b and the longest side of the triangle, the hypotenuse, as the length of c. Thus, the relationship with these lengths is the short equation of a2 + b2 = c2 (Dugopolski, 2012).

Let b = 2x + 4
Let c = 2x + 6

    First we will look at the equation so we know how far Ahmed will have to walk which is 2x + 6 paces from Castle Rock. If Ahmed used string and tied it to the Castle Rock point and labeled it as point “A” on paper it would be basically 2x + 6 paces.     Well other than the way its listed in the text the way that the pythagorean theorem can be used any time is when we have a right triangle, we know the length of two sides, and we want to find the third side. A basic example I would like to use is the following which is I was in Walmart the other day and saw a nice entertainment center on sale at a good price. The space for the TV set measured 17" x 21". I didn't want to take the time to go home to measure my TV set, or get the cabinet home only to find that it was too small. I knew my TV set had a 27" screen, and TV screens are measured on the diagonal. To figure out whether my TV would fit, I calculated the diagonal of the TV space in the entertainment center using the Pythagorean theorem: 172 + 212 = 289 + 441 = 730 So the diagonal of the entertainment center is the square root of 730, which is about 27.02". From figuring that out i saw that my tv should fit, but the 27" diagonal on the TV set measures the screen only, not the housing, speakers and control buttons. These extend the TV set's diagonal several inches, so I figured that my TV would not fit in the cabinet. When I got home, I measured my TV set and found that the entire set was 21" x 27.5", so it was a good decision not to buy the entertainment center.…
