The investigation of rape and other sex crimes represents a significant challenge for the criminal investigator. The manner in which the investigation is conducted can have an impact not only on a successful conclusion in court, but also on the psychological and social well-being of the victim. Sex crimes, more so than many other forms of criminal activity, are likely to leave an emotional scar that can last a lifetime. (Osterburg, J. 2014).…
“For every 100 rapists, only three will go to jail, and even then they can get out early for good behavior. Even though more people are reporting rape cases, there is still 54% of victims who won’t report a crime” (RAINN of Justice Department Data). Rape is any sexual contact for which someone doesn’t give permission. Today’s society is helping the rapist by victimizing the victim even more. By making a mockery of it, or by entertaining the thought of letting the rapist go free with just a slap on the wrist. As a result, society has started to excuse rapist by giving custody of the child, not taking the allegations seriously, and by trying to silence the victim and the people who knew something about it.…
In order to convict a criminal, prosecutors are required to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The most common criminal defenses fall under two categories, excuse and justification. An excuse is when a person admits to committing a criminal act but believes that he or she can’t be held responsible because there was no criminal content. Some excuses used in court today are; mental disorder, infancy (age), mistake of fact, mistake of law and automatism. In justification defenses, the accused admits to wrongdoing but argues that he or she should be freed from culpability or assessed reduced liability for the crime due to mitigating circumstances surrounding offense. These defenses are factors that excuse a competent person from liability for…
Based on a study conducted by Easter, Pollock, Pope, Smith & Wisdom (2013), a survey was administered to respondents addressing the following areas; barriers to accommodating services to the direct population (adults with mental illness), availability of services in the field of mental health within the criminal justice system, and the significant challenges faced upon reentry (p.445). Research findings illustrate that the target problem areas to reinforce for policy reform are better coordination of care to clients when providing mental health services and education of the direct population to service providers. Casual arguments reiterate the struggling aspects of the criminal justice system such as, inadequate mental health treatment to individuals…

In junior year, I was fortunate enough to have an open elective course of Criminal Justice at my school. In class, I acquire a mass of information from my instructor who has retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, ATF. Although it was unfortunate that there weren’t enough students who signed up Criminal Justice II for the following year. I had to adjust my core classes in order to continue my criminal justice studies while meeting the requirement to receive an advance diploma and an IB Career Certificate. When I had to make a hard choice to drop orchestra, an elective music class that I have been taking since 5th grade. In order to have enough time to be part of the Criminal Justice II at Marshall High School Academy. The…

Morality in the real world consists not of reasonable ethics but of customs and conventions, inferred understandings about what conduct will and will not be accepted (Hocutt, 2010). Therefore, morality is taught through being rewarded for complying with rules and punished when we fail to follow the rules; essentially these are methods that teach us to feel good when we do the right thing and guilty when we do not (Hocutt, 2010). Through critical reflection, our concepts of civility, fairness, justice, and community are developed internally (Williams & Arrigo, 2012). For this reason, ethics can be taught because it involves critical thinking. The motivation behind our personal choice to behave ethically is rooted in thinking and reasoning rather than in affect or even emotion (Williams & Arrigo, 2012). Like with most things, we make decisions based on…
The criminal justice system is very important to our everyday life. In order for the society to feel some kind of safety within their community all the core components are necessary. The core components of the American criminal justice system are law enforcement, criminal courts, and correctional agencies (Schmalleger, 2011). According to Francis Bacon, "If we do not maintain Justice, Justice will not maintain us" (Schmalleger, 2011, p. 17). This statement is very true, as a citizen it is our civil duty to uphold our justice system. .…
My desire to study Criminology with Sociology at university was sparked by my future career aspiration to join the police force; studying Criminology at university will provide a solid theoretical scaffold so that I may begin my career at the highest level possible. I believe that a career in the police force would suit me as it would provide diverse opportunities for personal challenge and career progression. The area of policing I aspire to work in is within the criminal investigation department, more specifically, focusing on the most common type of crime: street crime. As it is something that affects so many people’s lives, I feel I might be able to make the greatest impact here helping these victims. My current studies in Crime and Deviance for A2 Sociology have inspired me to learn about this topic area in much more depth.…
In all my higher education career I have completed various topics of research papers and projects. Although, I wouldn't never thought that being a Criminal Justice major I was gone be required to do a research project and presentation about a specific work of art that depicts to wars of the past. At first I had a lot of trouble finding the “ideal” artwork to start my research paper on. As a matter of fact, I consider using any random sculpture, painting, or music, but after a few weeks into the semester, and learning more about the different artworks and its painters. It changed my mind, so I decided to choose a piece of artwork that had an important significant for me. That being said, I came to the conclusion that I was gone do my research…
Each year, programs all around the country, schools, and parents do what they can to make sure they are safe. But, sex abuse keeps happening. Therefore, this is a practical problem that still needs much focus and to be addressed in many different arenas of educational, psychological, and sociological research. Regarding practical problems my research is best suited, in my opinion, to focus and provide a way to make a step and secure the future of the American society and the entire world at large. Each passing year guardians try to provide what is within their capability but still sexual abuse against children keep on happening. Therefore sexual abuse against children is a problem that needs much address in different social aspects.…
