The implications of the research was stated which is the need for nurses who work in corrections to work towards “decriminalizing” DSH and to develop a prison protocol that gives nurses permission to “just listen” and give incarcerated women permission to “just talk” without fear of reprisal”( Mangnall, J., & Yurkovich, E. 2010).Also, a new insight emerged that was that these women were being hurt if placed on isolations for punishment which increases the motivation for further injury.
The results of the study showed that incarcerated women had a buildup of anxiety which caused a visceral buildup of tension that reached a critical level necessitating a need to act in some way to gain relief. DSH provided a way to gain this relief though was temporary and was quickly supplanted by the negative consequences of disciplinary detention which lead to more …show more content…
The study findings attributed the women as having intense feelings of anxiety as a result of tension building up over an extended period and then reaching an unbearable level which then compels the women to gain relief by resorting to DSH. Another phenomenon emerged, which identified the relief to the woman's anxiety as only temporary and was quickly replaced by more anxiety and anger related to the negative consequences of disciplinary detention they would experience as a result of their act of DSH.
Sampling strategy was clear. They utilized a theoretical sampling which is commonly used in grounded theory research. Themes emerge from the data and the researcher can analyze these themes and develop a theory from the data .The researcher then reviews the current literature and existing theories related to the phenomenon and looks for similarities to the core variable in the data (Grove, Burns & Gray,
