Quarter 1 Reading Guide
Title of Novel _The Glass Castle ___ Author __Jeanette Walls _
I. Introduction. What was good about the first few paragraphs? Was it an effective beginning to the story? The story starts out rather well. It gives you a good first couple of pages to give you a good idea of what the story is going to be about. Plus, it also gives you a desire to continue reading to get the entire story. It starts out with Jeanette in a taxi, going to a party, only to see her mother rummaging through the garbage. II. Characters.
A. Jeannette, at the beginning of the story, is a prosperous news reporter in a pretty dress on her way to a very fancy party. This is the first glimpse we see of her, but the book is done as a ‘flashback’ of sorts, so even though technically she is a 30-something woman at the beginning of the story, she transitions back to when she was 3 years old. She talks, at least when she was talking with her mother when she was older, as if she knows what she’s talking of. She knows who ‘she’ is, even if she cannot at first come to terms with who her parents are. She begins by seeing her mother digging through the trash while she was on her way to a party. This upsets her enough to tell the cab driver to turn around so she could go back home. She, at the beginning of the story at least (I have not been able to get too far in the book at this point), cannot come to terms with her parent’s lifestyle, even after talking with her mother about it. Her mother seemed to be absolutely complacent with that lifestyle, and that’s what confused and haunted Jeanette. Even though she is very smart, Jeanette would have a lot of thinking to do to come to terms with what had happened. That is the premise of this book, and why I chose to read it. It seems so relatable, even if the vocabulary is more prominent at some points. I usually dislike historical fiction and Memoirs, but this book seems as if it’d be great for me.
