Describe the role of the citric acid cycle as a central metabolic mechanism. Explain what happens to the cells' abilities to oxidize acetyl CoA when intermediates of the cycle are drained off for amino acid biosynthesis. Describe the three steps in photosynthesis, detailing the interrelationships among them. (c.f. the discussion in the online classroom).

To sum this up proteins that consist of more than one polypeptide chain will display quaternary structure. Each individual polypeptide chain in a protein is referred to as a subunit. A dimer is known to be the simplest sort of quaternary structure as it contains two identical subunits. Interactions between subunits of a protein containing a quaternary structure are usually weak interactions such as hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding, and van der Waals. It is important to note that quaternary structures can be simple such as two identical subunits or even complex where dozens of different polypeptide chains come

    An example of a polymer, is a protein. The monomer used to make up is an amino acid. When two amino acids join together a dipeptide is formed, this is then made into a polypeptide chain by the joining of additional amino acids, it finally becomes a protein when more than one of these polypeptide chains link to one another in a condensation reaction. Proteins have a variety of functions, these functions are determined by their shapes. In order to do so it must therefore have a specific shape reflecting its function; it must be folded in a particular way that allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to bind to it, and as much as possible. One haemoglobin molecule can carry four oxygen molecules each bound to a specific site. Haemoglobin has a quaternary structure. Most of the amino acids in haemoglobin form alpha helix eps, connected by short non-helical segments.
