“During this time her capacity was increased from 2,410 to 5,500. By the end of World War II, the ship had carried more than 800,000 troops, traveled more than 600,000 miles and played a significant role in virtually every major Allied campaign.” (Wieser). While she was a troopship she got painted camouflage and called “The Grey Ghost.” After Queen Mary was the fastest troopship during World War II when it ended “…the Queen Mary began a 10-month retrofitting process, which would return the ship to her original glory.” (www.queenmary.com). When her “retrofitting process” was over Queen Mary when back to her old cruises in the Atlantic ocean she “…continued to do so for nearly two more decades.” (www.queenmary.com) But when air travel became more popular, Queen Mary ended her cruises once and for all. “On October 31, 1967, the Queen Mary departed on her final cruise, arriving in Long Beach, California…” (www.queenmary.com) The Queen Mary has been in the Long Beach Harbor ever sense and now is an event holder, restaurant, and hotel. This hotel has been inquired to be in the top ten most haunted places in America. The Queen Mary is told to be the first ship that has been reported to be haunted.
“It’s claimed that as many as 150 spirits roam the ship, with the ship herself being the site of nearly 50 deaths over the last 60 years.” The ship had a lot of workers that died during there work day. The engine room was where most of the deaths happened to the workers. “In the engine room during a drill an 18 year-old crew member was crushed. Dressed in blue coveralls and sporting a beard, the young man has often been spied walking the length of Shaft Alley before disappearing by door #13.” (Wieser) Some people that have stayed at the hotel also have seen two women walking around by the pool in 30 style bathing suits. Also around the pool area is a little girl named Jackie recorded to be “…sometimes clutching a teddy bear, and at other times calling for her mommy and dolly.” (?) Jackie drowned in the pool when the ship still sailed. In the first class stateroom the lights will turn on and off by themselves in the middle of the night. Also there has been seen a man with dark hair and a thirty style suit in the same area. Others have answered the phone with no one on the other light during early mornings. “In the third class children’s playroom, a baby’s cry has often been heard, which is thought to be the infant boy who died shortly after his birth.” (Wieser). Some people reported that they have heard some squeals, distant knocking on doors far way and also the doors slamming. Along
with
“…drastic temperature changes, and the aromas of smells long past.” (Wieser). Some other activity that has happened in the Queen Mary is “A beautiful young woman in a stylish evening gown can sometimes be spotted in the Queen’s Salon. Some claim she dances alone in a shadowy corner of the room.” (?)
