London-Town Each year London attracts over 15.3 million tourists. For me London was more than just a holiday location. I moved from Amsterdam to London for the first time when I was six and a half years old, and instantly I felt a connection to the country, specifically that wonderful city. There was something about London that just drew me to it. It was Christmas time when I first saw the city, so I have always thought the bright lights had something to do with it. Nearly three years later, when I moved to Frankfurt, Germany, the connection I had with London began to weaken. Whenever I thought about the city, I still felt a sense of peace come over me, but it was not the same. As much as I wanted to be happy and at home in Frankfurt, there was just something missing. Luckily, two years later, I moved back to my city. To a tourist, London may look like a labyrinth, a complex maze of never ending turns and streets. But there is so much more to it then that. When I was younger, the first time I saw London, I was in awe. I was so small compared to the city which was beyond huge. That was the first time I realised that I was a tiny part of something much, much bigger then myself. Standing on a corner of Oxford Street in the midst of the Christmas rush can be a frightening experience for a small child, but in my eyes it was amazing. Everywhere I looked, there were more people going in every possible direction. I found it incredible how so many people could fit in such a seemingly small area, with no apparent discomfort. The shoppers were doing a dance of sorts, weaving in and out of the passers by, side stepping, speeding up, and slowing down. To them, it was almost habit, an everyday activity, but to me it was brand new. I felt a burning desire to learn the dance. I stood to the stood to the side watching and trying to learn. I had wanted things before in my life but this was different, it was not just something I wanted it was more than that. I did not just

As explained by Blakely and Staples (2014, pg 22),migration contributes to the making and remaking of a street in many ways. High Street has been reshaped by migration multiple times, and a perfect example of this is the opening of European food stores along the drag in the last 5 years in the place of other local businesses which have closed. These serve not only to connect our European community to their home countries, but also to widen the palette of the local community by…

From city to city, cultures, environments, and beliefs vary immensely. A city means more than simply “a large town.” For example, my own home of Dallastown, Pennsylvania differs drastically from the much larger city of Philadelphia. Where I grew up, the white population is the overwhelming majority; Philadelphia obviously differs in this category. Cities provide a haven of interesting people from conflicting ideologies, color, and financial statuses. My home’s landscape is regularly hilly and forested, whereas Philadelphia is full of skyscrapers, streets, and city-lights. Every town and city is unique in their own sense; landmarks, culture, music, and even transportation define what that place might stand for, or signify. I’ve visited numerous…

Violence has become a major problem in modern-day society. Gruesome video games and certain entertainment shows such as pro-wrestling has been exposing violence to kids that later on wish to emulate these actions. These actions are then publicized to the world by violent acts toward other species and human beings. In his article, “An Elephant Crackup,” Charles Siebert depicts the violence that humans have done toward the elephant culture and how humans should put a stop to these acts and save elephants from extinction. With his strong defense on elephants, Siebert gives the reader a better understanding of the violence that is going on not only toward elephants and wildlife, but also toward modern-day civic life. Elephants are wild creatures just like humans and, therefore, both species must take care of one another to obtain a better and healthier society. With positive human action, both man and pachyderm can be raised with proper guidance, eliminating the violence that would put both species at risk.…

City Road is home to many people of different gender, class, age, sexuality and race or ethnicities and different business types. It is these different business types that attract people for different reasons, for example Janet Symmons’ Xquisite Africa shop has been specifically designed to attract those of African ethnicity who may feel excluded from other shops on city road and want a place where they can purchase items from their native country (The Open University, 2014). In ‘The Life and Times of the Street: Part 1’, the Mackintosh centre which is now a sports club has an upper class history, the building makes it look expensive and exclusive, even though it tries to be inclusive to all in the community. This perception of it being expensive and a member’s only type establishment is why people feel they don’t belong at the Mackintosh centre.…
