Notes: all essays must focus on at least one of the novels we have studied. And you are NOT permitted to write about the same text you chose for your in-class essay.
1) A topic of your choice, based on at least two texts, including one of Giovanni’s Room, Jekyll and Hyde or Lord of the Flies. Must be approved by teacher or your essay will not be accepted!
2) Based on the texts we have read, which types of human desires are seen to pose the greatest threat to society? According to the stories, why do such desires have to be regulated? Explain by analysing two of Giovanni’s Room, Jekyll and Hyde, Lord of the Flies, “Civilization and Its Discontents” or “Masculinity as Homophobia” (Kimmel).
3) Compare Giovanni’s Room to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Explain why each text could be considered a criticism of the morality of its time.
4) Compare Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to Lord of the Flies. Explain what each text says about man’s nature and culture (i.e. the rules of society) in controlling his primitive instincts.
5) Why is a secret self often developed? And which self is the “true” self,” if such a thing exists? Explain by analysing Giovanni’s Room, Jekyll and Hyde or Lord of the Flies, “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem, “Civilization and Its Discontents” or “Masculinity as Homophobia” (Kimmel).
6) Why should disobedience be seen as a virtue rather than a vice? Consider the dangers of obeying as well as the benefits of disobeying.
