What are Willy's ideas regarding success? (Provide specific examples form he play)
Willy believes that an individual's success is determined mainly by their popularity & charisma
He also feels that appearances are also important because they define an individual's personality & character, which enable them to be well liked and therefore gain greater achievements in life
“I been wondering why you polish the car so careful.” (Pg 28)
The car is used to create that picture - that if it looks good on the outside, that doesn’t necessarily mean it works/functioning
This equates too…
Both of his sons b/c they look like they’ve got all the possibilities, BUT, in reality, they are discontent
Appearances are VERY important to Willy b/c he talks about how it’s important to be liked - popularity is necessary b/c what people see in you (your appearance – usually the 1st impression) is important à the way you present yourself is important
Obviously, Willy isn’t going to show the truth of himself to his family or anybody else - each member of the family tries to hide/cover parts of themselves that they feel don’t measure up to their own expectations or expectations of others
He downplays the importance of education - he doesn't really promote education as much as being popular - he doesn't really push for the one component that goes into success
He is ok with Biff being given the answers by Brenard to write his final state exam
1st of all this is cheating so he's promoting that à Willy condones that kind of thing à he doesn't care about his sons' potential success
In what ways is Biff similar to Willy? How is he different?
Biff is different from Willy because he desires the rural life - he enjoys being outdoors with a slower & relaxed lifestyle to avoid competition - to avoid getting ahead & being overly concerned about his gaining high social status
In what ways is Happy similar to Willy?
Happy is similar to Willy
