6. Which scenes are comical in this novel, and why are they funny? Are these situations also sad, or exasperating?
There are lots of funny scenes and quotes in this book, most of them are related to the main character, Christopher. It already starts with his introduction: "My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,507." (page 2). It’s a strange way of introducing yourself and therefore I found it funny.
Christopher is actually really funny for the readers, but I understand if he is your son, that it’s not that amusing anymore. For example: He doesn’t like yellow or brown things and he refuses to touch them, he hates France, he drives his mother’s car,… That’s all really absurd and also rather sad. Even worse is the fact that if he sees 4 red cars in a row is a good day, 3 red cars in a row is a quite good day, 5 red cars in a row is a super good day, 4 yellow cars in a row is a black day. This seems comical, but if you know that on a black day he doesn’t speak to anyone, it’s very sad.
The way in which describes everything very detailed is nice at the beginning, but after a while it becomes a bit annoying. For example at the police station: "Then he said that we could go and he stood up and opened the door and we walked out into the corridor and back to the front desk where I picked up my Swiss Army Knife and my piece of string and the piece of the wooden puzzle and the 3 pellets of rat food for Toby and my £1.47 and the paperclip and my front door key which were all in a little plastic bag and we drove home." (page 23) This is totally not important and therefore amusing but after a while it gets a bit exasperating.
