Quinta Monroy Housing: A Case Study
It was noted energy consumption can be reduced by using innovative materials and construction methods. For example, with reference to Tour Bois-le-Pretre Transformation, prefabricated balconies were used, which reflect the solar rays and increase ventilation. They minimize the need for heating and cooling (Aaronson, 2012) because of the utilization of reflective solar curtain hangs inside the loose-fit enclosure of the winter garden and a half-inch-thick thermal curtain hangs inside the glass sliding doors (Foges, 2013). In fact, the energy consumption was reduced by 50% after the redevelopment (Aaronson, 2012).
In the case of Quinta Monroy Housing, the resources were saved by proving basic facilities in one-half (40m2) and leaving second for

Also provided was a cost comparison of replacing these cheaper materials with material from Lowes (2010). A comparison of materials used for Oakwood homes (2000) versus Rockwell (2010) stick-built homes was shown. It was also stated and proven manufactured homes are not energy efficient. It was also explained what a big disadvantage and how difficult it can be for one to try to acquire a manufactured home loan; this showed how hard is it is for someone to try to resell one. Because of these disadvantages, it is proven that unless one is planning on a big financial commitment and plans on living in the home forever that people should not purchase a manufactured home. Goosens (2002) advises, before one goes and buys a manufactured home, one should consider the options of buying a higher priced home that will appreciate in value and last longer. When one is considering a manufactured home because these homes are cheaper and have more square footage, remember the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Space is not everything and one needs to consider if the extra space is worth the extra costs that can be avoided by sacrificing a few square feet. People should ask themselves if they are ready for such a big financial…

If some heat escapes from the house, it costs money and wastes resources. In deciding how cost-effective an energy-saving measure is, we need to know what its pay-back time is. In other words, taking the example of double-glazing: how long will it take before the cost of having the double-glazing installed will be recovered by what we save in fuel bills? The calculation is:…

The arena will be the first in the world to combine the use of displacement ventilation – a reduced-energy cooling system utilizing passive climate controlled air – and crowdsourced feedback to maximize fan comfort. Five massive hangar doors above the grand entrance will open and allow the arena to use natural cooling phenomenon in Sacramento – The Delta Breeze – to control the building’s climate efficiently. With over 300 days of sunshine in Sacramento, the arena’s urban-smart energy system – with a specially designed 1.2 megawatt solar array on the arena roof and an 11-megawatt solar farm 40 miles away through a SMUD partnership – provides a creative solution for generating the power for the venue’s over 200 events all year long (Golden one center,…

Yan Ma, the representative of Downtown, started off by raising Downtown’s concerns about the future use of the Bullard Houses. Instead of mentioning about their current financial situation, Yan repeatedly questioned me about the purpose for which Absentia was going to acquire the site. From my prospective, I didn’t have the authority to reveal to anyone the real purpose, which is to building a high-rise hotel in the garden area. Hence, I made much effort in an attempt to get around this question. Nevertheless, she mentioned that the only way she could continue this negotiation was to know the intended use of the site because her clients bought the property in the hope that their ancestors’ heritage can be protected from being destroyed. With no rout of retreat, I chose to reveal that Milton Hotel Group wishes to build a hotel but to keep the exterior appearance as it was at the moment. Yan surprisingly seemed not opposed with Milton’s projection. Frankly speaking, I did not quite understand why she agreed to move on to the next issue after hearing a high-rise hotel will be built and the interior of the Bullard House will be redesigned as the lobby of the hotel. With this big issue being solved, we soon reached a final deal of a total price of $18.5 million in which $13 million would be paid up front and the remaining $5.5 million would be paid by installment within one and a half…

Energy conservation and consumption patterns have been a serious concern over the past thirty years. With the new age of globalisation and changing patterns in human needs, the need for energy has raised manifold. With the demand of energy rising, the need for new sources of energy became the first priority. This gave birth to the idea of alternative green energy. This paper deals with the need for conservation of traditional energy sources and development of alternative ones, especially solar energy in this case. The paper deals with the concept of green buildings and the impact civil engineering can bring to the movement of energy conservation by integrating buildings with the photovoltaic technology. How such a technique can make the buildings self sustaining in case of energy demand and consumption over the years. A few case studies have also been involved in the paper along with the credibility of such integration when we look 30 years down the line. Over much of the past 30 years, the standard for solar technology installed on buildings has been rack-mounted, silicon crystalline-based solar panels. Today, a new type of technology called thin-film photovoltaic is ready to change the way solar collectors are installed on buildings. This paper gives a broad overview of both the old and the new solar technologies, plus insight on designing and installing photovoltaic systems.…
