Medifast is an extremely popular diet because of the fast results most people see while following this diet. It was developed by physicians and has been recommended by more than 20,000 doctors since 1980.…
2. Janine made this statement: “... if your brain doesn't get carbs- well, glucose, anyway- you get really cranky. You have to have enough carbs.” Find out if Janine is right. How does the nervous system use glucose?…
This paper will discuss an article published in Time.com (2007, March) by Lindsey Tanner, explaining a recent research study which found that the Atkins diet beat three other diets for weight loss over a one year period. The actual research study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on March 21, 2007. Though the findings revealed greater weight loss for the Atkins participants, this paper will discuss the reasons why the study may be flawed, and its results not appropriate for making inferences regarding the public at large.…
The first idea that captured my attention was the detox phenomenon. The detox phenomenon has to do with the innovations of marketers, lifestyle gurus, and therapists. I never have heard of this concept until reading this novel, and discovered that the detox system is not in the medical textbook. If it is not science, what is it? Is the title of this section and as you read this section you see that the detox system is a marketing invention. I find this necessary to talk about because many individuals are worried about the negative effects that fast food can leave in your body therefore they go through this detox system. Marketers are putting this detox system idea on the media so that viewers will begin to wonder all about it and want to try it. Everywhere I go, I see these detox ideas on television, iPhone apps, internet pop up ads, etc. They are literally put out everywhere for everyone to see, it is unavoidable in our current state of society. The detox system has become a cultural product because it has no scientific meaning so that is how it is understood. The more you buy into this product, the more self-dramatizing it’ll be which is sad because at that point it has become your routine to partake in these unrealistic master cleanse fruit flush diets that models and celebrities do. I agree with Goldacre that there is…
Steven Pinker has a voice all his own- engaging and amiable, but also informative and scientific. His light style provides an interesting contradiction to the heaviness of the topic he presents to us. It’s a tough question: where does morality stem from? Is it genetic? Does it come from the structure of our brains?…

The excerpt saying "Homes that made Baba's house in Wazir Akbar Khan look like a servant's hut. " is an example of irony because Baba is an educated and rich man in Afghanistan, but in America, he is viewed as an ignorant poor immigrant. The novel’s most prominent example of irony is Amir not stopping Assef from raping Hassan. Amir doesn't stop the rape because he wants Baba's approval; But since he didn't stop Assef, Amir becomes the kind of coward that Baba worried he would become. Amir has always looked to Baba for reassurance and to make sure he has his approval.…
The diet I chose to look at was the 4 Hour Body Diet by Timothy Ferriss. Ferriss is also the author of the #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The 4-Hour Workweek. More recently, he wrote the upcoming release of The 4 Hour Chef that is being banned from bookstores nationwide. I stumbled upon this book one day when I was browsing the internet for new and interesting ways to lose weight and Ferriss’s book caught my eye. Just reading the first page enticed me to read more. The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman, I thought to myself this has to be the biggest joke ever. I picked up the book and just reading the first page made me laugh “how to lose 20 pounds in 30 days (without exercise) on the uber simple Slow- Carb diet. At this point I just had to buy the book to see what crazy fad diet had just befallen me. when I got home the first page alone was disturbing Tim was describing how he just consumed almost two full-size barbecue chicken pizzas and three handfuls of mixed nuts, for a cumulative total of about 4,400 calories. That was only his fourth meal of the day breakfast having consisted of two glasses of grapefruit juice, a large cup of coffee with cinnamon, two chocolate croissants, and two bear claws. only 72 hours later testing his progress with an ultrasound analyzer his body fat had dropped from 11.9% to 10.2% in only 14 days. So what is Tim’s secret, he claims it is his little rules…
A ‘fad diet’ is a diet that promises dramatic weight loss, which results in a short period of time. These diets usually remove all food groups and due to this do not actually provide the essential nutrients that we need for our everyday lives. These diets do not result in long-term weight loss and are a very unhealthy way of loosing weight. Fad diets are very intriguing because they all promise a quick fix. Nutritionists are concerned about fad diets because they can cause symptoms like dehydration, weakness, fatigue, nausea, headaches, constipation and inadequate nutrients that our bodies need.…

It’s something different, and there is a lot at stake. To the opposition, I say this, “Just try it!” I don’t have the means, time, or ability to run the necessary experiments and tests to prove unequivocally what you need to hear. “Just try it!” It’s not easy to break an addiction. Change is hard. It takes effort and a belief that the other side is potentially better. I tried it, and I can tell you that I have been blown away. The other side of breaking the addiction is not just better – it’s enlightening. My body is now properly fueled and has re-learned to use fat like it is designed to do, and consequently it has turned into a fat burning machine. Some of the improvements I did not expect; my mental clarity is unbelievable, my energy levels are consistent without late day crashes, I sleep like a rock, and my skin is glowing. I don’t think there is a one size fit’s all diet that must be strictly adhered to. Your diet should be experimented with and “scaled” to what you need. It’s not easy to switch from a low-fat, high-carb diet to a high-fat, low-carb diet. We have been conditioned for a long time to believe otherwise. Stop thinking of food as a reward – its fuel! Approach your diet like you approach the workout of the day (WOD). Focus on evolving, improving your food choices, and trying new things. There goes the bar…

Obesity is a major epidemic in America. American’s are known for their obsession with food. At church last Sunday, the pastor was preaching on the topic of “fasting”. Fasting would be defined as the abstinence from eating certain or all foods in an effort to rely solely on God for inner strength. The pastor talked about how we as Americans are constantly looking for our next meal. We are always anticipating when and what we are going to eat. We even schedule our entire days around mealtime. Americans are essentially obsessed with food. In an effort to change this aspect of our culture, I have devised a three-part plan.…
When I first started my journey, I was excited about the idea. Because I love unhealthy snacks, I decided to keep that in my diet, but to only eat a little. Oops! "I guess that kind of defeated the purpose of losing weight." I thought to myself.…
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (WHO, 1948) I cannot emphasize the importance of health maintenance too much. For a lot of people, combining exercise and work is a challenge because their bodies do not respond well to a morning regimen and they get home too late to go to the gym in the evening. Recently, Americans are willing to try a regimen first promulgated by Dr. Robert Atkins several decades ago-The Diet Martyr, which means that a diet low in fat and high in legumes and vegetables helped a person lose weight and stay healthy. (Fishman, n.d)…
