Quotes From The Giver
I would like to suggest that you do not admit Jonas to Link School. He would not be a

good addition to this school. He has no core values and he has too much responsibility for going

to school. First, He has to care for Gabe. Next he has to show core values, which he does not.

Lastly, he is not accustomed to such an environment. He would have a very hard time.

First, he is very disrespectful, and inconsiderate. He knows that he is the only one with

feelings, but still gets mad at his dad and the speaker when he learns about release. According o

the book, he mocks the speaker and his dad, when the giver tells him that his parents and the

speaker know nothing. He says, “‘I will take care of that, sir. I will take care of that, sir,’ Jonas

‘I will do whatever you like, sir. I will kill people, sir. Old

people? Small newborn people? I’d be happy to kill them, sir. Thank you for your instructions,

sir. How may I help y-’ He couldn’t seem to stop.” If he could be this inconsiderate, what makes

us think he will change? This shows he does not have any core values, especially those for caring

and respect.

Next, he has to take care for Gabe. He shows tis when the book states, “He wept because

he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself”. If he has to

go to school, who, or what will take care of Gabe? In order for Gabe to live, Jonas has to be there

with him. After all, Jonas is Gabe's only hope. If those who have jobs and a home struggle to

raise an infant, I doubt a 13 yr. old could do it. He just has more pressing matters than becoming

educated.

Lastly, he would not fit in if he were to go to Link. In his old community, there were

rules against disrespect. Here, there are rules, but it’s not like anyone follows them. He would

One day while the Giver was giving jonas his favorite memory and was perceiving words from it he, ‘“couldn’t quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so strong in the room.’ “love,” the Giver told him” (157 Lowry). Jonas had the memory of the feeling and finally realized that he had that feeling for a lot of people in the community that were important to him. For example, he realized that he had the feeling of love towards his Father, his Mother, Lily, Gabe, Fiona, the Giver, and in the beginning of the story Asher. He realized that from just one memory.…

The capability of the memories are so powerful that Jonas experienced how they felt and he could actually sense them. For example on the first page of chapter 11,“ Then he shivered… tongue touched the suddenly chilled air, or “ He felt it blow against his hands…”, (Lowry)these quotes show that the memories grip a great power. The memories made Jonas perceive words he had never knew of before. They let him feel sensations that he had never knew existed. Jonas needed these memories because they were going to become a major part of his life. This is only one of the great things the memories can do. These memories also can cause awful things, such as destruction. When talking about sharing memories with the Giver, the Giver denies the idea. “… the community has to bear the burden themselves…great chaos…” (Lowry 194-195)so if the memories were to be released there would be great a pandemonium and vast destruction. But after conquering that, everyone will have wisdom, the ability to feel, and emotions, to live normal lives. From all the memories it is learned that the memories hold both good and bad…

He understands that the only way for him to teach his fellow prisoners the truth is to force them to see as well. The Philosopher-King as described by Plato should be intelligent, ambition in things of the mind, diligent, disciplined, temperate, and reliable. Only citizens who posses all of these required qualities should be considered candidates for a philosopher-ruler. Jonas knows the enlightenment of the Community will be difficult and painful. The "Giver" remains with the Community in order to help them through the challenging times ahead. This is the best thing Jonas and the Giver could do for them. They realize it will be a lot of work to lead the other citizens into the light of knowledge but the business of rulers is not to make themselves happy. Their happiness is to be realized in the happiness of citizens in the ideal state and the people of the Community do not have enough knowledge to know…

The first significant choice Jonas made is throwing the pill away. In this scene, Jonas receives the memory of love and family, by watching a Christmas morning with Grandparents, their children, and their Grandchildren. During the evening meal, he asks his family if they love him. They reply that is rude to ask, and love is a meaningless word. The next day, when Jonas wakes up in the morning, he decides to throw his pill away. “Something within him, something that had grown there through the memory, told him to throw the pill away.” (p. 129) The choice is significant because it changes Jonas and it changes the plot (later in the book). It shows that he can gain emotions, such as love, something restricted in the community. This will allow him to make more decisions, such as giving Gabe memories, and leaving the community which shows he’s a rebel. Giving Gabe memories leads to the changing of the plot by letting Gabe grow, or else he would be dead before Jonas knowing of death during release, which means Jonas has to save Gabe, Jonas’ only known family, or else he would die. Throwing the pill also changes the plot when Jonas leaves the community because Jonas fells the urge to save Gabe when he finds out he’s going to die in the morning. Jonas takes Gabe and runs away to Elsewhere where they hope for a better life. It is clearly shown that Jonas throwing away the pill is significant to the story.…

Jonas realizes and chooses to leave the town, but as he does, he hears that Gabriel, a child his father is currently in care for, “will…be released... First thing tomorrow morning”, as he is an underdeveloped infant. Jonas takes Gabriel with him as he bikes off out to “Else-where” (165-166). As they reach “Else-Where” Jonas remarks about himself being able to “remember [this] place” but the experience “was not the grasping of a thin and burdensome recollection…[the experience] was different” and “for the first time” he “heard something he knew to be music… he heard people singing”(178-180). Jonas realizes the fallacies within the dystopia of the “town” he lives in, and runs away, reliving the town of an important role they rely on. As he finally reaches elsewhere with the baby, he realizes that this was familiar in a way unlike the memories he was given, however, this was something else entirely, a memory he has actually experienced. He begins to fathom…

Jonas is constructed to convey ideas about society by his speech, thoughts, actions, appearance, interaction with others and his name. We first see this when his sister, Lily says to him, “He has funny eyes just like you Jonas!” Most people in the community have dark eyes but a few have pale eyes. This is because The Community is trying to get sameness, by making everyone have the same eye colour. The next thing we read is that when he is playing a simple game of catch with his best friend Asher, the apple they are playing with changes for a second it seems to Jonas. When he asks Asher about it Asher doesn’t see anything strange. This is when Jonas is first seeing colour. Colour has been taken out of The Community because it creates individualism and creativity, which could create envy or jealousy, and jeopardise equality. Another idea is precision of language, which in fact is very imprecise. We see this when Jonas asks his parents “Do you love me?” he is then laughed at and chastised for using such “imprecise” language, and is recommended to say “Do you enjoy me?” instead. This is because The Community wants the people to be non confrontational and does not condone the expression of real feelings, it is almost vague. We also see that his name, Jonas in the bible means “To bring misfortune and a great tempest on his companions”…
