Rabbit Proof Fence Summary
Rabbit proof fence
An Australian drama movie
2002
Book: “Follow the rabbit proof fence” by Doris Pilkington Garimara. Which is the true story of her mother, Molly.

The movie takes place in Western Australia during the 1930´s

the story begins in a remote town of Jigalong where three children live with their mother and grandmother.

14 yr old Molly
8 yr old Daisy
10 yr old Gracie

The town lies along the rabbit proof fence, which runs for several thousand miles.

The “protector” of Western Australia Aborigines A.O. Neville signs an order to relocate these girls to Moore River education camp, were they will grow up

Neville refers the children as “half-castes” because they have one white and one Aboriginal parent.
Therefore they must be bred out of existence.

After the camp the girls will be servants to white families.

Molly, Gracie and Daisy decide to escape the camp and walk home to Jigalong.

An Aboriginal tracker, Moodoo is called in to help track down the girls.

The girls are trained in disguising their tracks, and receive aid from strangers along the path.

Eventually they find the fence.

Neville spreads word that Gracie´s mother is in the town of Willuna. The information finds its way to an Aboriginal traveller who helps the girls.

Gracie breaks off the group, and in the attempt to catch a train she gets captured and taken away.

Molly and Daisy continues, and make it home.

Along with their mother and grandmother the sisters hide in the desert.

In the end Molly explains that Gracie never returned to Jigalong.

And that her two own daughters including herself were taken back to Moore River. Molly managed to escape with one daughter, Annabelle. And once again walked the 2400 km.

However, Annabelle was taken away after a short time and Molly never saw her daughter again.

I think it's a good movie with an interesting and sad story. And I think everyone should see

The process of studying the concept of belonging has opened my eyes to the importance of one’s connection to their cultural heritage to a feeling of belonging. Phillip Noyce’s film Rabbit Proof Fence, Peter Skzynecki’s poems “Feliks Skrzynecki” and “Postcard” and ______________(the related text) all powerfully explore the concept of belonging and the centrality of culture through a variety of film, poetic and ___________ techniques. In particular, all four texts investigate how a sense of belonging arises from a feeling of connection to places, with Molly’s connection to land and her mother, Feliks’s connection to his garden and Polish friends, the persona’s contrasting lack of connection to Warsaw in “Postcard” and (the related texts). The idea that an individual can choose not to belong is explored in Molly’s escape from Moore River Training settlement, the persona’s rejection of his father’s…

    Race: Social Construct

The Aborigine’s uneasiness towards whites because of how the whites treat and degrade them for their physical attributes exemplifies how race is a social construct. In the movie, the half caste kids were nervous of being taken and never being able to see their mothers again. The half castes were taken to their new “home” where they were “[checked] for skin color and the fairer ones who are cleverer” to see who can be freed to leave and get a good education (Noyce). The whites were the ones who were free and had many more opportunities than the Aborigines did because of the color of their skin; hence, “Their race in the end determined whether they were free or enslaved” (192 López). Their freedom was controlled by the whites, who caused them and their family’s pain because the whites thought their race was superior. In Rabbit Proof Fence, the whites separate themselves and the Aborigines because of their skin color and make the mistake of determining race by biological differences.…

Rabbit Proof Fence has been published both as a book and as a movie. Being a reader or a viewer entirely changes our point of view on the story. As a reader, we get descriptive insight on the situations and emotions of the characters. We are then able to re-create these visually using our imagination and have endless freedom doing so. As a viewer, our creativity is somewhat restricted. We do not imagine the characters’ physical appearance, the locations or the overall situations in the same way as in a book. These elements are already given to us. Throughout this essay I will be exploring how the music and the filming creates a contrast between reading the book with elaborate descriptions.…
