According to tshaonline.org, the SWC became an official conference on December 8, 1914. This conference came to be by L. Theo Bellmont who was the athletic director at Texas University (tshaonline.org). He felt as though there needed to be a conference that “furthered the interest of intercollegiate athletics (tshaonline.org). The Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was a major conference for 82 years before its participants started to go to other conferences that started to form. The first eight schools that were a part of the Southwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference were Baylor, Rice, Southwestern University, Arkansas, Oklahoma A&M University now Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma University, Texas A&M University and Texas University. Later the conference shortened its name to the Southwest Conference or the SWC. Along with the name change, the SWC added Southern Methodist University also known as SMU in 1918 and Texas Christian University also known as TCU in 1923 and later Texas Tech. Southwestern, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma A&M left the SWC. The SWC was a conference that helped promote high academic and ethical standards for the schools that joined and participated. Throughout the history of the SWC, the idea of high academic and athletic standards was recognized, but the integrity of the conference is what caused the conference to fall apart. One of the problems that the SWC had a problem with, just like the rest of America, with race just like America, did during the time when there was discrimination against people of color the color barrier was first broken in SWC football
