As Marquette University’s Mission Week focusing on “Racial Justice: Black, White, and the Call of the Church” comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the meaning of racial justice, as well as how to properly engage in this difficult topic in the city of Milwaukee. I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge while viewing the film Milwaukee 53206, which focuses on one of our community’s poorest zip codes as well as the nation’s most incarcerated zip code. The social ills of this area are not just a result of one issue, but multiple issues within the community including the average yearly income, socioeconomic status, quality of life and family relationships, and other social determinants.…

Research shows how elected officials at the local and state level not only allowed, but promoted segregation, deceptive real estate practices, which only fueled further decline into already poor St. Louis neighborhoods. St. Louis city mayor Francis Slay expressed in a radio interview with local reporter Don Marsh, how truly segregated most of the St. Louis remains today, even after the passing of desegregation and the Civil Rights Amendment of 1964. Mayor Slay stated that his city continues to be one of the most segregated in America (Rosenbaum, 2015). Though the city and surrounding municipalities are working to include diversity in community programs, there is still a long way to go before the racial divide in St. Louis decreases. Segregation continues today, within St. Louis and it affects the school system, housing, and businesses within Ferguson and surrounding communities are evident of decades of elected officials not enforcing desegregation laws as well as supporting unlawful real estate practices from the 1960’s…

Barry, Dan. “Bias Suit Filed on Behalf of Disabled Men in South Carolina Meat Plant.” The New York Times, www.nytimes.com/2016/10/01/us/bias-suit-disabled-workers-meat-plant.html?mtrref=www.google.com&_r=0. Accessed 23 Feb. 2017. The perception that non-able bodied people are not hardworking or are a hassle is the reason why less than half of non-able bodied people are unemployed. However, even when non-able bodied people are able to find jobs, they might have to work in horrendous conditions. Two years ago several older men with intellectual abilities were found living in broken down bunkhouses and getting paid less than minimum wage. Now a bias suit is being filed on their behalf. This is reflected in the fact that Employer…

After much excruciating searches on digital and electronic records, it has come to the conclusion that minority groups have turned the Western civilization for the worst. The once prosperous West is now being challenged by violent, illogical-based minorities that seek to impose their twisted ideologies onto the innocents of the West. As a Middle Easterner, who is pro-American, pro-Western, and pro-Democracy, it has been an embarrassment to be categorized with a group of people who haven't contributed meaning to society. I've tried my best to be a productive member of society, and carry value for myself. Yet, when I have the chance of providing a beam of positive for my people, the same group of people commit horrendous crimes, wicked acts in…
Gender discrimination is quite pervasive in our society. Schools, childcare institutions, family, media, and other societal institutions transmit and preserve stereotypes regarding women and men. In the Western societies, conventional gender traits are frequently related to power – men and their specific activities are classified as influential, public oriented, important, brave, productive, strong, outgoing, and having increased value, social recognition, and monetary rewards. On the other hand, it is widely believed that the main traits of women include; family-oriented, caring, dependent, and passive.…
The shameful history of the United States is a burden that is currently affecting everything from education to legal policy. Racial segregation has taken a toll on society and the lives of many minorities. The American judicial system lacks the understanding of human potential by targeting low income minorities and subjugating them for petty misdemeanors. Due to racial discrimination, false allegations towards minorities have resulted in wrongfully incarcerated people for petty crimes; more than likely, they will serve longer sentences for these offenses than a Caucasian person would. Without the necessary resources provided, lack of social capital can inflict damage to their reputation and the overall racial perception society has on minorities.…
The experience of growing up in Chicago is polarizing. It’s one of the most diverse cities in the country, yet, one of the most segregated. I am grateful for living in a neighborhood that had every range of diversity in terms of racial background, ethnic background, gender, age, and socioeconomic status. The most obvious characteristic in which Chicago neighborhoods are divided are by race and socioeconomic status. As I grew up I was constantly surrounded by people who looked different from me, spoke different languages, ate different food, and had different family structures and traditions. I didn’t think much of it because that was normal.…
The article continued on to illustrate the plethora of generational issues that African American communities are continuously subjected to when it comes to poor school systems, crime infested communities, and lack of access to quality education. African Americans who reside in these communities have been there for generations struggling with persistent poverty concerns. The issue is that the government has set in place numerous of zoning restrictions in efforts to keep the Africain American communities from expanding in order to confine them to one particular area. In efforts to ensure African American communities would continue to be segregated from White communities the government devised a plan to build intersate highways to act as barriers…
