Racial Profiling Research Papers
Racial profiling has been around for quite so many years and is a very controversial issue. Racial profiling refers to the targeting of particular individuals by law enforcement authorities based not on their behavior, but rather their personal characteristics. It is generally used to encompass more than simply an individual's race. As used in this report, it encompasses race, ethnicity, national origin, and religion and means the impermissible use by law enforcement authorities of these personal characteristics, to any degree, in determining which individuals to stop, detain, question, or subject to other law enforcement activities (Leadership Conference, 2011). Racial profiling is a rising issue that needs to be addressed and terminated before it worsens.
Racial profiling can take us back to the existence of slavery. Today, black people are often suspected of committing crimes like drug possession, which then leads to a vehicle search, a stop-and-frisk or a pat-down. The common factors in all of this, despite the fact that we're nearly 150 years removed from the end of slavery, is blackness and …show more content…
When a set of characteristics is used to create a profile of someone who has committed a crime in order to look for an unknown subject, most people have no objection. Indeed, this type of profiling is generally admired. The negative type of profiling occurs when White law enforcement officers abuse their authority or specifically target minorities for police attention. The issue becomes more clouded when not all of the officers are White and not all of the suspects are minorities. If profiling could be concisely defined as an issue of racial bias, it would be somewhat easier to seek remedies. The truth is it is a far more complex issue.
