When a set of characteristics is used to create a profile of someone who has committed a crime in order to look for an unknown subject, most people have no objection. Indeed, this type of profiling is generally admired. The negative type of profiling occurs when White law enforcement officers abuse their authority or specifically target minorities for police attention. The issue becomes more clouded when not all of the officers are White and not all of the suspects are minorities. If profiling could be concisely defined as an issue of racial bias, it would be somewhat easier to seek remedies. The truth is it is a far more complex issue.
