African Americans have endured the harsh realities of both racism and segregation for many years. The racism and inequality are fueled and encouraged by White Americans, who believe that they are the superior race. Racism can exist in any form including physical and verbal abuse. In 1945, Richard Wright, in his autobiography,Black Boy, discusses his experiences as a child, which was sad as the eyeball of sorrow behind a shroud. Since Richard Wright was born before the Civil Rights Movement, he would not know about the positive strives made in American history such as the election of Barack Obama as the first African American President. President Obama was influential throughout his two terms (2009-2017) as he was the first African American President . President Obama wanted to break barriers as he wanted unification amongst the citizens with his programs. President Obama left a legacy where people respected him as an individual and as a leader. In the Daily Cougar article “President Obama’s positive impact on American history” written by Faith Alford, he sighed that “Obama’s legacy goes beyond political decisions. He is relatable because he connects with most of today’s youth.” He also talks about how President Obama is the first African American President and that his continuous groundbreaking changes in laws, and the relief many middle-class Americans feel are proof that he has done great things through his programs. President Obama together with his programs built a legacy in which people from different race would benefit in and breaking the barriers of racism and segregation. In Elizabeth Austin’s article “In Defense of the President: Barack Obama’s Impact and Legacy”, she pointed out that President Obama was like none other than previous Presidents and was destined to be a leader before he stepped onto the big stage because he is African American. It is hard to get a good sense of what percentage of Americans continue to hold prejudiced views about other racial groups. Despite both our uncertainty about how many Americans continue to hold racist views and the fact that the percentage of Americans holding such views has declined over time, racism continues to have significance in American life. In addition to individual racism, institutional racism occurs within organizations like the government, corporations, and schools. While individual prejudice may result in a person experiencing a racial slur or a hate crime, institutional racism is responsible for many of the inequalities between racial groups, such as poverty and segregation. Institutional racism can continue even when there is no individual racist person within an institution. Instead, institutional racism is manifested in the policies and practices built into an institution that lead to racist outcomes.
By in large, there are still racism even after the Civil Rights Movement but there has improvements in how people think about racism today. Richard Wright would feel a little bit pleased on how racism evolved into something that’s more less violent except for the recent events that sparked
