Many innocent lives are being lost due to their skin color; an example of this is the tragic loss of Trayvon Martin. February 26, 2012, is a day that many will not forget; that day 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an African-American young man was murdered. “Mother of Trayvon Martin claimed the attack was racially motivated” (Stebner). Trayvon’s mother believes that her son was killed because of his skin color; George Zimmerman, the man that murdered him, claimed that it was self-defense. Trayvon was unarmed and innocent but was seen as a threat because he was black. While some innocent black individuals are losing their lives, a large portion of them are losing opportunities. Alexis Tellis, a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa, has experienced the feeling of isolation. “While growing up on the south side of Des Moines, she had never felt like such an outsider.”(Hardy, Carlson). After another student made a racial comment, Alexis felt unwelcomed at her new college.
