Radiologist Personal Statement
Through vaporized solder the diode flashed red. Lub-Dub, Lub-Dub. It works! After weeks, my digital stethoscope was finally functioning as I had designed. The project started with the simple ambition of listening in on my preceptor’s stethoscope while he performed a heart exam, but ended up answering an imperative question about my medical future. In that moment I realized that my varied interests, individual strengths, and desire to be challenged converged into a single medical field; radiology. I am meant to be a radiologist because it provides an opportunity to explore emerging technology and solve problems creatively. I am meant to be a radiologist because I enjoy the intellectual demands required in making an accurate diagnosis. Above …show more content…
I understand the importance of precise language, respect the value of different medical fields, and look forward to working as part of a team that provides excellent patient care. Growing up in a household where new ideas were regularly discussed and then constantly challenged to be improved has ingrained a sense of innovation in me. I love technology and enjoy learning new skills, so radiology is a natural fit. It’s unprecedented and rapid advancement as a result of improved imaging and digitalization is what attracted me to this field, and I believe an equally compelling future awaits. In this regard, my programming expertise and interest in technology will be an asset. By having firsthand experience with the devastating consequences of a delayed diagnosis in my family, being in a position to contribute to computer learning models and imaging techniques that can improve healthcare outcomes is personally important. I look forward to carrying on this field’s tradition of innovation, and believe my enthusiasm for cutting edge techniques will ensure that I stay up to date in a continually changing medical landscape. My decision for residency is a careful one. While my application is not optimally timed and admittedly less than perfect, I possess key attributes that will make me a great

It has not been quite recently when I scheduled and fulfilled the observation requirement, but about a year ago this month when applying for this program last year. The amazing thing about it is that the memory of this day still remains vividly in my mind. It was on this day that I learned the basic and not so basic job requirements for becoming a radiology technologist. Many might think that this job is limited to aiming a machine, positioning a patient, and taking pictures of their bones, but come to find out there was a whole lot more to it.…

John Brockett stepped foot in the New Haven Colony in 1638 as one of its chief founders and civil engineers. He was appointed the first surgeon for the colonies’ soldiers, and served in King Philip’s War under this role. His son, my 8th great-grandfather, would receive medical training at Oxford and return to America as the first resident physician in the New Haven Colony. At this time, ailments of the chest were treated with poultices and prayer. Little could my ancestors imagine that the heart and lungs could be put on bypass, that aortic valves would be threaded through the arterial system on a catheter, or that lung resections could be completed through three small incisions in the chest.…

I have chosen this career path for the patients. I have chosen this career because it is two paths that I can switch back and forth from, cardiac and pregnancy. I can go to school for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, then at the end of my four years, I can either go into cardiac sonography or pregnancy sonography. I could also be on a rotation so I will be able to do both things that I would enjoy. Being able to take this career path will give me confidence that I can do something that has never been done in my family. My mom and stepdad, stepmom and dad, have never been to college. So completely college and going into a career that I want to pursue means a lot. I am so ecstatic to show my mom she did raise me right. My mom and Stepdad are my…

Looking at my reasons for embarking in this program overall, has been rather interesting to me. After graduating from my High School in the Bronx, I barely had any knowledge of what the Speech & Language field was all about. I was first introduced to it by a close friend whose stepmother worked as a Speech pathologist in New York City. She had mentioned how she became interested in the field, and even suggested it to me. I was going to come into the University at Buffalo undecided, but the minute she told me about this field I was captivate. I decided to do some research, and gain knowledge on what the major was all about and the different directions that one can take when working in this field. I am someone who has always loved to eventually work with children, so this field became even more interesting when I knew that working with children was a possibility.…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. But, being a curious individual, growing up I became fascinated toward other career paths in my childhood as well. For example, I wanted to become a pilot when I was in second grade, and wanted to become a professional volleyball player when I was in fifth grade. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…

It was a dreary day in October when Mom asked if Kaley, my older sister, and I would want to come with her to a sonogram. My mom was eight months pregnant at the time. Kaley and I have talked about this for awhile now, and we got the chance. The next day, Kaley and I left school around nine o’clock and checked out. We got in Kaley’s truck and drove up to the hospital. As we were walking in the doors, we saw mom waiting for us. She looked so happy. All of the nurses were really nice and said hello to us. Mom, Kaley, and I sat in a waiting room for about half an hour before the radiologist came out and told mom to come on in. Mom introduced Kaley and I to the lady, and then she asked if either of us were interested in radiology. At the time, I didn’t know anything about it. Walking into the small room with one bed, I saw the machine that showed the sonograms. I was awed at the sight of it all. I took a seat right next to mom. The lady started the procedure with the gel and pulled her tools out. I sat there so amazed by it all. I had never experienced anything like this. I couldn’t keep my eye off the monitor. I imagined if I grew up to be a radiologist. I could help people. I wouldn’t mind it because I would not have to deal with blood or internal parts of the body. The next week mom went back to get another sonogram, and I begged her to let me go. She said sorry, she couldn’t. When I got home from school that day, Mom told me that the radiologist in at the hospital said that she’d love for me to come job shadow…

Throughout my education, science based courses have been a central core. One course that left an indelible mark was called, “Medical Careers”.
